About this listen
In this audio course, you will explore the remarkable vision of Duns Scotus with Sr. Mary Beth Ingham, CSJ (PhD, University of Fribourg), a leading expert on his life and thought.
Blessed John Duns Scotus, OFM, (1266 - 1308) lived at the height of medieval scholasticism and became one of its premier luminaries. Commended as the Doctor Subtilis (the "Subtle Doctor") for his keen yet nuanced insights, he is rightfully regarded as one of the greatest philosopher-theologians. He influenced a wide range of writers and philosophers from Hopkins to Heidegger, and his thought remains as important as ever.
Now, you can join Sr. Ingham, professor of philosophical theology at the Franciscan School of Theology, on a fascinating overview of his philosophy and theology. In her 12 lecture course, you will look at Scotus' medieval context and position as a successor of Augustine and Aquinas. As you explore the legacy of this Franciscan master, you will find inspiration in his optimism, ongoing conversion, and emphasis on practical action.
Throughout these lectures, Scotus' commitment to Franciscan values and intuitions shines through. In Christianity's third millennium, his vision remains as vibrant and thought-provoking as ever.

Now you too can discover the inspiring model of St. Francis as outlined by St. Bonaventure. Bonaventure talks about this spiritual journey as taking place in six steps, like the six days of creation. On each step of the journey, he explores a new dimension of our relationship with God. Bonaventure presents us with a mystical theology, leading us step by step from reflection on the world around us, through reflection on our inner world as human beings, toward the world above us, the divine life of the Holy Trinity.

However, the real question is, do you let beauty define your spiritual life? Ideas of beauty and spirituality have always been intertwined.

Story
Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109) was the outstanding philosopher-theologian of the Latin West between Augustine and the thirteenth century. As a public figure, especially as Archbishop of Canterbury, he corresponded with kings and nobles, popes and bishops, in letters that reveal a fascinating personality and flesh out the practical dimensions of his theoretical philosophy. He wrote at a time when a renewed interest in logic encouraged careful and rigorous argumentation, but before the recovery of Aristotle filled the philosophical discourse.

Whether taken as a book of faith or a cultural artifact, the New Testament is among the most significant writings the world has ever known, its web of meaning relied upon by virtually every major writer in the last 2,000 years. Yet the New Testament is not only one of Western civilization’s most believed books, but also one of its most widely disputed, often maligned, and least clearly understood, with a vast number of people unaware of how it was written and transmitted.

Demosthenes (384-322 BCE) is regarded as one of the greatest orators of Classical times. This view has persisted through the centuries even though his rousing speeches warning of the dangers of Macedonian expansion failed to stem the course of continued military success. Each of the orations in this collection is preceded with an introduction setting the scene, and outlining the context in which they were delivered. This also gives a concise picture of Athens at this difficult point in its history. All the speeches are prefaced by the historical setting.

Story
Aristotle's Metaphysics was the first major study of the subject of metaphysics - in other words, an inquiry into 'first philosophy', or 'wisdom'. It differs from Physics which is concerned with the natural world: things which are subject to the laws of nature, things that move and change, are measurable. In Metaphysics, the study falls on 'being qua being' - being insofar as it is being; the causes and principles of being, the causes and principles of substances.

St. Francis worked hard at evangelizing Calvinist Protestants to return to the Catholic faith. However, they were afraid of the backlash, and so, St. Francis wrote pamphlets and slipped them under doors and posted them on walls. After four years of his efforts, more than 70,000 people had returned to the faith. These pamphlets were compiled into this book, which remains one of the best sources for defending the Catholic faith.

Story
Over the past hundred years, scholars have attacked the historical truth of the Gospels and argued that they were originally anonymous and filled with contradictions. In The Case for Jesus, Brant Pitre taps in to the wells of Christian scripture, history, and tradition to ask and answer a number of different questions, including: If we don't know who wrote the Gospels, how can we trust them? How are the four Gospels different from other Gospels, such as the lost Gospel of "Q" and the Gospel of Thomas?

Story
In the first half of life, we are naturally preoccupied with establishing ourselves; climbing, achieving, and performing. But as we grow older and encounter challenges and mistakes, we need to see ourselves in a different and more life-giving way. This message of falling down - that is in fact moving upward - is the most resisted and counterintuitive of messages in the world's religions. Falling Upward offers a new paradigm for understanding one of the most profound of life's mysteries: how those who have fallen down are the only ones who understand "up".

In his decades as a globally recognized teacher, Richard Rohr has helped millions realize what is at stake in matters of faith and spirituality. Yet Rohr has never written on the most perennially talked about topic in Christianity: Jesus. Most know who Jesus was, but who was Christ? Drawing on scripture, history, and spiritual practice, Rohr articulates a transformative view of Jesus Christ as a portrait of God’s constant, unfolding work in the world.

Clear exposition - heavy emphasis on theology, rather than philosophy
Ingham has written a nice overview of the thoughts of Duns Scotus. She places him in context in his times, clarifies what the characteristic new things are in his philosophy (compared to e.g. Thomas Aquinas), and is both concise and clear.
Of course, for medieval philosophers there is not sharp boundary between theology and philosophy. Having admitted that, I still thought that there was a lot more theology in these lectures than philosophy. An entire lecture on mariology, and the explanation of what Duns Scotus brings to the field of the dogma’s around Mary, were new to me, but also a somewhat odd point that - apart from conceptually intriguing- has no relevance to anyone apart from the few devout Catholics that have an interest in Duns Scotus. While Ingham repeatedly claims that Duns Scotus is a logician and argues like one, this is not brought about well. Having had extensive lectures on Medieval philosophy in which that was displayed, showed that there is more logic in Scotus than that Ingham brings out.
Ingham also stresses very often that Duns Scotus was a Franciscan. Like she herself. While she makes clear that this is indeed highly relevant, also for his philosophy (and I learned quite bit about that), after a few times I could have missed the next 20 times.
Ingham is not a great narrator - of course, it is nice to hear the author herself, but I think others might have done a slightly better job.
Would I recommend it? Yes, if you are looking for a short but well-balanced insight into both his philosophy AND theology; being interested only in his philosophy, which is discussed in about 4-5 of the 12 lectures, I thought it was a little “thin” in that area. Overall recommendation would be 3.5/5.
