A group of inseparable childhood friends are now adults, physically and psychologically devastated by war....

Jonathan Steele attempts to drink the painful past away....

Jonathan was wounded in that fateful battle and now suffers from PTSD. He wants to put the nightmare behind him, but when Ricky's ghost appears with cryptic warnings about Maggie's house, he begins to question his sanity.

Bobby Weeks is a homeless veteran struggling with a lycanthropic curse....

Afraid of bringing harm, Bobby stays far away from those he loves. But after a full moon, a mysterious woman approaches him and reveals a vision about a house with a sinister presence, and he realizes staying away might no longer be an option.

Minister Jake Williams lost his faith on the battlefield....

While Jake will do anything to reconnect with God, he turns to vices to fill the religious void. But a church elder urges him to take a sabbatical, and a ghost tells him to quit the ministry, and his life is more out of control than ever.

When Maggie wakes in a strange subterranean cavern, she can't deny her home harbors dark secrets. Desperate, she sends letters to her old friends to reunite in Jotham, and events conspire to draw them all to the house...unaware of the danger awaiting them.

The friends have already been through hell, but can any of them survive the evil dwelling beneath the House on Oak Lee?

Patience pays off

It took a minute (a while) to get into this book, but knowing Thomas Flowers and trusting him to be a good writer, I wanted to stick it out. The war-torn histories of the characters were depressing, and it's no wonder they were bitter, pissed off and suicidal. Thomas Flowers has a great imagination and a wonderful ear for dialog.

Rick Gregory is no stranger to horror and he's done a great job on a number of other books. I listened carefully and he held my attention well.

PTSD for the rest of us

Something about Rick Gregory's voice takes me to another place. I hear him and also hear his characters. His narrator voice and character voice is unique and I love all of it. This story focuses mainly on five friends, namely one with PTSD, a wife who lost her husband but who isn't quite gone, one who found faith but lost it, and one who is lost and may be something else, I really was brought into the life of these soldiers. All of them have an integral part of the story.

The story is a hodgepodge of past and present, over viewing the lives of a few friends. Other than explaining the haunting I assume one has after going to war there isn't much "scare" until the end. This book, is in my mind, is where the character development starts and the following books are where the rest of the story takes off. Great start and lead off; but;, once you get there it ends abruptly. Now to wait for the next chapter. Looking forward to it. This book is leading to something great. Maybe lycans, maybe insectman, mabye even a ghost in the basement. All roads are possible.

Listen to this first story and stick with it. I hope the next includes the same narrator, Rick does a great job.

A great start to this series, looking for more

As a veteran myself, I felt like I could relate to how the things you see can change you. The characters are developed and the emotion in this book felt very real. I liked the paranormal aspects too. I'll definitely look for more in this series.

Confusing

Some reviewers complained about the narrator. I thought he did just fine, and I listen to a LOT of books. They do offer an audio sample to see if the narrator's voice is to your liking, so why not listen first?

The story itself left me confused. The author jumps from character to character in such a way that I found myself back-tracking to make sure I understood what was going on. I know this is supposed to be book one of a series, but none of the characters have even the slightest hint of even the beginnings of a resolution to their plight. The book ending was, to me, akin to breaking away mid-sentence...frustrating. To me, the characters are barely sketched out. I am not interested enough to buy book two. Sorry, but this book was provided for free in exchange for an honest review, and this is my honest review.,

Scary for real!

I loved this book. As a veteran of the Army, I could certainly connect with the characters and understand what they're going through. PTSD is scary stuff for sure, but combine that with the imagination of Thomas Flowers and you get one creepy story! I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. Excellent narration by Rick Gregory!

A True Horror Story

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Dwelling: Subdue, Book 1 is the first book of the Subdue Trilogy that can be enjoyed as a stand alone novel, but would probably make a better impact if read with the other books in the series.
The true horror lurking in its pages, is not the menacing house that attracts innocent victims to its malevolent aura through the years, but the psychological damages war experiences bring to those who survive them and their families. Four childhood friends Maggie, Johnathan, Jake, and Bobby, are once again reunited by evil forces bent on destroying their lives, while Ricky, the fifth member of their group who was killed during a patrol mission, comes back to hunt and warn his best friend Jonathan who saw him die before his eyes.
It is horror at its best and the complexity of the characters will make it more real than you wish it to be

good and creepy!

This is an excellent start to a brand-new series! About a group of friends I started the club back when they were Young team and have The bond throughout their life even when bad things happen. This book is creepy, and has excellent character development. It also show a great side of PTSD. and what a lot of our vets go through when they come home.

This really get you hooked's for the next book. This book is very well written!

Thomas flowers does an excellent job bringing these characters to life.

A very good start to the trilogy

As a general rule, I tend to stay away from trilogies from authors that I am not familiar with. They are a dime a dozen on Amazon and the few that I have tried have been supremely disappointing. When I had the opportunity to listen to this one though, I glanced at some of the reviews and saw that some of the people I trust here on GR had spoken highly of it. What the hell. I gave it a go and am very glad that I did.

There is a lot going on with this one. It all started when they were kids. The Suicide Squad. Now all grown up and all touched by tragedy in some way. Some more than others. Bobby’s situation is particularly hairy and took me completely by surprise. Pleasantly, I might add. er>

Something strange is brewing that seems to be emanating from an old house on Oak Lee Road and may have connected to them out of the circumstances that went down in the war in Iraq. Each must battle their own internal demons and it’s looking like they may have to battle a real one as well. This time, together. It’s all connected somehow. Just when it was coming together…it was over.

Yes, I know it is a trilogy. Yes, I know it wasn’t going to be wrapped in a nice neat little bow. I know these things. I still would have liked a wee more of an ending to this tale to gear up for the next one versus ending as abruptly as it did. Evidently it still worked though, because now I need to get to the next one in the trilogy. Unfortunately, I’m not very good at that sometimes.
