About this listen

"Kathy Bero’s story is a powerful one about stepping out in faith, embracing fears, and in a few clever Judo moves, turning the fear process on its head and into a force for good." - Larry Mullen, Jr., Founder U2

"Kathy’s health journey is simply remarkable. It gives a glimpse into the dynamic healing potential of human beings and offers direction for anyone wanting to navigate the key ingredients of one’s powerful self-healing mechanisms. This book helps us learn from an outlier that found a healing path when our science did not think it was possible..." - David Rakel MD, Professor & Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health and Founder of Center for Integrative Health at the University of Wisconsin. Author of The Compassionate Connection: The Healing Power of Empathy and Mindful Listening and a variety of medical textbooks.

"Her book is inspiring, informative and highly recommended!" - Kelly A. Turner, Ph.D. author of Radical Remission New York Times Best Seller

Bero knows how to tell a story. In 1998, she purchased 60 acres to forage wild foods from and become a subsistence farmer with her family. Seven years later, Kathy’s idyllic rural lifestyle was turned upside down. In 2005, she was diagnosed with stage IV inflammatory breast cancer and in 2006 a high-grade tumor in her head and neck. With children aged two and seven, three dogs and a barn full of animals, Kathy white knuckled her way through toxic treatments and severe side-effects to become a powerful self-advocate with a dedicated trust in her innate abilities to complete her healing outside of the protocol box.

E.A.T. An unconventional decade in the life of a cancer patient is a transparent, honest, and relatable account of battling cancer through the prism of healing. Kathy’s genuine optimism and passion for life is contagious in this candid and deeply human story that speaks straight to the heart, providing insight into how she created her own integrative healing protocol and overcame cancer. With a life expectancy of just 21 months, Kathy's healing demonstrates how inner work just for today can change a disastrous outcome into an unexpected victory.

Bero's case piqued the interest of Harvard University’s NEER study, looking to understand enigmatic responders, meaning individuals with unexpected success battling cancer. As the ninth participant accepted into the study, she is hoping their work will lead to big changes in conventional medical protocols. Bero’s steadfast belief is that true health care reform starts with clean, high-quality food paired with energy healing modalities that deepen our spiritual connection. Her approach was simple, attainable, and obviously sustainable, embracing the idea of “that which you give attention to grows.

"Candid, detailed, engaging, compelling, memorable, well-written, and offering something very precious and timely..."
- Midwest Book Review

"Bero kept journals, documenting with exquisite detail the effects of the toxic chemicals, burns from radiation, issues with her family, and more...readers who are cancer patients themselves or are interested in a patient’s experience will find that this book has real value." - Kirkus Reviews

" Mydlach Bero fights with doctors, hospital systems–even treatments, to discover that she owns the three qualities defining the survival of the fittest: a strong support system, an ability to roll with the punches, and a mindset that never takes ‘no’ for an answer. A manual of hope for anyone confronting serious illness." - Indie Reader Review
