About this listen

"Narrator Irene Bedard--who is of Iñupiaq, Yu'pik, Cree, and French Canadian heritage--brings vocal authenticity to Iñupiaq author/illustrator Nasugraq Rainey Hopson's debut novel.... Adopting the sonorous delivery of an oral storyteller, Bedard catches listeners up in the boy's terror and determination as he learns the eagle's complicated songs and dances and then goes back to the tundra to bring all its people together for a great feast.... The particulars of Arctic life ground the boy's supernatural adventure, welcoming listeners into his world." (AudioFile)

I have grown up hearing the shorter forgotten version of this story and I am so happy to hear Rainey writing it down, as most stories were passed on through spoken word. She illustrates the story so well with details of the culture. Thankful that this tale has been solidified in written text and narrated so wonderfully.

A great story told beautifully

Nasugraq Rainey Hopson wrote a masterful story for Inupiat, other Alaska Natives, and other readers to enjoy for generations. As a Sugpiaq person from Kodiak it was wonderful to be immersed in her story world and Inupiaq cosmology and traditions. Quyanaa
