Publisher's summary

At the mercy of the scheming Imperial Chamberlain, Cleander, Rufinus is dispatched to Dacia, a land of untamed beauty at the edge of the Roman world, with orders to investigate the two legionary commanders there for signs of treason.

Uncertain what to expect from his mission, the two generals or the land itself, Rufinus travels east with Senova and his faithful hound, Acheron. But machinations and skullduggery are afoot in Dacia, and the young praetorian is walking into the heart of empire-changing events.

As the generals Clodius Albinus and Pescennius Niger work to put the province right following recent invasions and revolts, Rufinus begins his investigation, suffering insubordinate soldiers, unseen attackers and dangerous locals. At the edge of the world, Rufinus is about to stumble across a web that will put him in direct danger and threaten the empire to its core. Welcome to Dacia.

Often hapless hero

Gnaeus Marcius Rustius Rufinus has to be one of the heroes plagued with self doubt, often merited, assisted by comrades to a rosy end from a shitty middle. It is a great fun listen.

unexpected humorous moments

the way the story always comes back to real history and shoes the logical steps to some of the most notorious moments in roman history

An action packed adventure

For fans of historical fiction this series is great. It's a nice change from the murder mysteries that are common in this genre, more political thriller then an ancient detective story. The only nitpick is that the audio book is missing the historical note that the Kindle edition has. The audio levels are also a little uneven.

Continued Excellence by S.J.A. Turney!

The story gets better and better!

And Achron is still one of the best characters in the series.
The question is does this end with the 5 books or are there more to come? Anyone, I hate and will not peak ahead!!!??

Utterly stupid and repetitive

I loved his Marius’ Mules books. These started off shaky and have only gotten worse. The guy was tortured for being an idiot and what happens? He still acts like an idiot. The books are becoming so repetitive.
