Publisher's summary
School’s out! But that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the school year for Max and his best friend Sam. It just means that Filmore Middle School is closing because of the Covid-19 flu pandemic. Max will be quarantined at home for “an indefinite amount of time”. Instead of having fun outsmarting the school’s bully, he will be adapting to online classes, crazy family meetings, and using dad's hilarious downstairs toilet.

Story
Being a kid can really stink. And no one knows this better than Greg Heffley, who finds himself thrust into middle school, where undersized weaklings share the hallways with kids who are taller, meaner, and already shaving. In Diary of a Wimpy Kid, author and illustrator Jeff Kinney introduces us to an unlikely hero. As Greg says in his diary: Just don't expect me to be all "Dear Diary" this and "Dear Diary" that. Luckily for us, what Greg Heffley says he won’t do and what he actually does are two very different things.

Story
What do you wish for most? It's a question that Oswald, Sarah, and Millie think they know the answer to. Oswald wishes his summer wasn't so boring, Sarah wishes to be beautiful, and Millie wishes she could just disappear from the face of the earth. But in the twisted world of Five Nights at Freddy's, their hearts' deepest desires have an unexpected cost. In this volume, horror master Scott Cawthon spins three sinister novella-length stories from different corners of his series' canon.

Story
A distinctive new voice: Rex Ogle's story of starting middle school on the free lunch program is timely, heartbreaking, and true. Free Lunch is the story of Rex Ogle's first semester in sixth grade. Rex and his baby brother often went hungry, wore secondhand clothes, and were short of school supplies, and Rex was on his school's free lunch program. Grounded in the immediacy of physical hunger and the humiliation of having to announce it every day in the school lunch line, Rex's is a compelling story of a more profound hunger - that of a child for his parents' love and care.

Story
By acclaimed writer Nora Raleigh Baskin, this is the eye-opening depiction of an autistic boy's daily and lifelong struggles to exist in a "neurotypical" world. The only place sixth grader Jason Blake can be himself is online, where he posts the short stories he writes. It's there that Jason finds Rebecca. Though the two have common ground, Jason can't face the consequences that meeting Rebecca might bring - but if he doesn't meet her, there's no chance to have a real relationship.

When Ari's mother died four years ago, she had two final wishes: that Ari and her older brother, Gage, would stay together always, and that Ari would go to Carter, the middle school for gifted students. So when eighteen-year-old Gage decided he could no longer live with their bossy guardian, Janna, Ari knew she had to go with him - even though she'd miss baking cookies with Janna and curling up to watch HGTV. What Ari didn't realize was that Gage didn't have an apartment yet.

Mishna Wolff grew up in a poor black neighborhood with her single father, a white man who truly believed he was black. "He strutted around with a short perm, a Cosby-esque sweater, gold chains and a Kangol---telling jokes like Redd Fox, and giving advice like Jesse Jackson. You couldn't tell my father he was white. Believe me, I tried," writes Wolff. And so from early childhood on, her father began his crusade to make his white daughter down.

Jasmine and Chelsea are best friends on a mission - they’re sick of the way women are treated even at their progressive NYC high school, so they decide to start a Women's Rights Club. They post their work online - poems, essays, videos of Chelsea performing her poetry, and Jasmine's response to the racial microaggressions she experiences - and soon go viral. But with such positive support, the club is also targeted by trolls. When things escalate, the principal shuts the club down. Not willing to be silenced, Jasmine and Chelsea will risk everything for their voices to be heard.

Hilarious Fun!
A hilarious, realistic, and yet sobering tale of the impact school-age children are facing being quarantined during the middle of their school year, for who knows how long. This tale is told from the viewpoint of Max, a.k.a. Ear Wax Max, and describes his confusion, his excitement, and his sense of loss. Confined to home and having to learn on-line, we are given an insider view of what the parents and students are facing with this new life. Vividly described in hilarious terms, we see the results of the confrontation between mom and little sister and witness first-hand our inability as parents to take on one more task.
The author, Alisdair Baird is a gifted storyteller who vividly and richly put to words what most parents forced into this situation feels and reacts. Further, he describes how bewildering and lonely this situation is for Max and his friend, Sam. The undercurrent of pain is there, subtle but still there – life as they know it is over, something new is happening and they don’t understand it.
Baird fully develops the characters in a realistic manner, provides authentic (and often heard at my home) conversations, and nice plot twists that are simple yet poignant.
The narrator, Andrew James Roberts gives an excellent performance. He provides each character with a unique voice that helps to define who they are and does it in a smooth and flawless manner. He speaks clearly and with a nice rhythm.
Several times I thought I would wet my pants, especially when I read about Max’s mom and his sister’s interaction in the kitchen … that could so be me! This is a wonderful book that should be heard by everyone!
There were no issues with the production or quality of this audiobook; it was well done.
