Great for relaxation entertainment, and education

Ira Simmonds' 'Orchard' (Book of Selected Stories) is the perfect item for people who have an appreciation for a good story, one that transports us to another world through narrative accounts which have their basis in real life experiences, unbelievable events, or just simple manifestations of nature and life on his native Island of St Kitts, located in the Caribbean region of our continent. Ira uses these accounts to provide the reader with some insight into the different experiences which were a part of his upbringing in St Kitts.

From the natural, surrounding environment and the behavior of the many creatures which were a part of that ecosystem to the idiosyncratic behavior of childhood schoolmates, to peculiar and interesting hobbies (such as bird watching), or the culinary delights that are natural to the region (such as the use of hot sauce in the diet) Ira takes us on a roller coaster which keeps us reading (or listening) and wanting more. Included in this package is information which gives us a bird's eye view of some of the experiences and potential life-transforming lessons that are a part of daily life for so many of us.

We learn about his commitment to family and care for our elders who have paved the way for us in this life and we are able to appreciate the challenges of coping with serious, progressive terminal illnesses as we try to move forward with our daily, 'normal' life and its many responsibilities. All of this is well packaged into a collage which allows the reader to begin to read at any point in the book. Each story is independent of the others and can therefore hold its own.

If you are a lover of literature and the exquisite use of language, humor, story telling, history, biography, or documentary; if you're just a reader looking for something worth your while to read, or listen to, something that will transport you away from some of the chaos that tends to be our common experience on a daily basis, then this is the place for you. These stories may take you back to a familiar place and time (especially if you are a native of the Caribbean region and culture). They serve as a source of relaxation, entertainment, information and education, all wrapped in one neat package.

The book and audible have been published in English and Spanish. The Spanish translation (El Huerto: Cuentos Seleccionados) is extremely accurate in its presentation and representation of Ira Simmonds' skillful and colorful use of language to illustrate, or create a mental image which transports the reader back to the place and time in question. For those of us who are schoolteachers, this makes for perfect reading (or listening) material which may also help students to develop, an interest in literature, writing, or cultural awareness (among other things). I strongly recommend this book (or audible) for all ages and for all lovers of literature, culture and story telling, and I congratulate Mr. Simmonds on a wonderful, very meaningful literary presentation, one that captivates the mind and spirit from the time we begin reading until the moment we turn the last page.
