En la religión este deseo se cumple, pero sólo en la fantasía, y en este sentido la religión es una ilusión: una fantasía de cumplimiento de deseos. El progreso de la ciencia lleva al reconocimiento de la impotencia humana y, por tanto, al declive de la religión; Freud se congratula de esta evolución.
