Publisher's summary

From the Sunday Times bestselling author of Saving Missy

A mother.

A daughter.

A secret waiting to be uncovered.

For too long – since the sudden death of her mother as a teenager, since the birth of her daughter, Em, when she was just seventeen – Delphine has been unable to let go of the past, obsessed with protecting Em and clinging to a secret that could ruin everything. She’s been living life in safe shades of grey.

The day that Delphine finally stands up for herself is the day that changes everything.

Delphine begins to remember what it’s like to want more: rediscovering her singing voice, opening herself to friendship, and reviving not only her mother’s roots, but her mother’s memories. As her life begins to fill with colour, can she be brave for herself and for Em? And what would happen if she finally told the truth?

A big-hearted, hopeful novel about finding second chances – and taking them.

Too much French

Great book! The only reason my overall experience is not rated 5 is the extensive use of French in the book. It was not just a word here or there but whole sentences in some instances that were frustrating for someone who doesn't speak it.

Feel Good Book

Em and Me is the second novel by Beth Morrey and I was very keen to read it after enjoying her debut novel.

Delphine Jones, a young single parent, is the star of this book, but she has a huge cast of supporting characters and the way the relationships with them all weave is what is so joyous about this book. I particularly loved reading about Delphine’s friendship with Letty, who is such a fun character to get to know.

In fact when I think about what I love about this book the most, it is the strength of the female relationships in it, between Delphine and her daughter Em, as well as with Letty, her teachers and others.

I also enjoyed the movement of narrative from present to past and back again, filling in the back story as you progress.

Another very enjoyable listen, I’m already looking forward to Beth Morrey’s next book!

Pearl Mackie was outstanding with the delivery of the story
