About this listen

The sweeping biography of the enigmatic racer and sports car mogul who built the Ferrari brand—the inspiration for the major motion picture Ferrari directed by Michael Mannfeaturing a new foreword and epilogue

Genius? Tyrant? Power broker? Enzo Ferrari is the impressively researched, fully detailed biography of one of the most powerful men of the twentieth century. Brock Yates penetrated Ferrari’s inner circle and reveals everything, from his early days in the town of Modena to his bizarre relationship with his illegitimate son; from his fanatic passion for speed to his brilliant marketing of the famous Ferrari image; from his manipulative but enormously effective management tactics to his own frustrated dreams. Fast, fun, and scandalous, Enzo Ferrari more than lives up to its remarkable subject.

Critic reviews

“Captivating . . . Yates deftly records the carnage of major races, business wheeling and dealing, and the political dimensions of motor racing from the pre-WWII Rome-Berlin Axis to today’s ribbon-waving nationalism.”—Publishers Weekly

interesting potryal of a man who was very likely flawed - like many successful entrepreneurs. However, the author rarely misses an opportunity to take a shot at the subject of his book...and Italians. Disappointing book that certainly reflects a comfort with derogatory commentary reflective of the times of its original publication. It detracts from what otherwise is an interesting story. Finally, the reader's non-native Italian pronunciations are more appropriate for Mario Bros. than a serious biography.

Author seems to have an axe to grind

the choppy nature of the performance causes so much irritation that I struggled to finish it. I do belive the book was great, however the narrator and editing are unforgivable

the story of a lifetime

The author includes lots of interesting information. But, and this is a big but, Yates never misses an opportunity to take a swipe at Enzo Ferrari. There are lots of interesting bits of information but I couldn't imagine writing an entire book about someone you clearly do not like. He was criticized quite heavily when this book was originally released and I can see why.

15 hour hit piece.

Too much on the races. Would have liked a bit more about the man and his life.

How the movie is based on only a small segment of Ferrari’s life.

I greatly enjoyed the story. Learned a lot about Enzo Ferrari. But the performer insisted on pronouncing the Italian names and words with an Italian accent, as if we were in Italy listening to a native. This was…annoying. And distracting. And because the book is loaded with Italian terms, it really took away from the story. I almost returned it at the beginning. A word to future performers - When a book is in English, please use English pronunciations.

Very detailed, performance annoying at times.

there is good information in it and its really the only thorough biography ive seen so far. But this guy really didn't like the man. Its weird to write an entire book about someone you don't like. The book would actually be great if someone could go through and just remove all the authors unnecessary opinions. And the author has a lot of them.

This guy hates enzo
