Story
Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident.

She’s seen it all: men who lie in their dating profile, men who stick her with the dinner bill, and worst of all, men who can't shut up about their mothers. But finally, she hits the jackpot. Story
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

Story
To trace the history of the twenty-first century so far is to trace a history of unaffordability and shortage. After years of refusing to build sufficient housing, America has a national housing crisis. After years of limiting immigration, we don’t have enough workers. Despite decades of being warned about the consequences of climate change, we haven’t built anything close to the clean-energy infrastructure we need. Ambitious public projects are finished late and over budget—if they are ever finished at all.

It is eavesdropping on an epic book discussion!
The light and honest back and forth of the discussion was inspiring to hear. A group of women, one of which being RACHEL HOLLIS (!) - having a talk about being nerds, handling and owning life, and loving books for comfort, insight and joy. A great hour of your life if you are looking for a new list of books to add into your Audible list.
Also, before today, I would never have chosen a romance novel to read. The discussion inspired me to open my lens to a new genre I would not have tried - thanks!
Now, on to adding a few of the books to my wish list!

Go Rachel!
I have read her first book, Girl Wash Your Face, and although I have read books that were as good or better, I think the critics (readers) have been RIDICULOUSLY harsh. It was a great book, even if the information may not be relatable to every single person in every walk of life. To me, that in and of itself doesn't diminish what she wrote. I am not just like her in all aspects of life, but I was still able to find some nuggets of wisdom in her story. In this interview, she addresses the "haters" and stands her ground about her story. As she SHOULD. Her message is true and empowering, she is simply telling HER story and it is no ones's place to judge. She elaborates on some of the points she makes in the book and continues the interview with some anecdotes. There is also a reference in this interview to one of my favorite personal growth books, The Four Agreements, and that is something I really identify with. I like that this talk drives home that Rachel is just human and presents a very normal account of a successful, empowered woman and that she DOES have daily struggles like anxiety so it is very relatable in that. I really appreciated her story. If you do like her you will enjoy this up close and personal view. If you don't, maybe listen to this and give her another chance.

Episode 18
This one was alright not my favorite. I'm not into female empowerment. (which is weird, I guess I'm more into people empowerment) So this one didn't fit my taste, it was still interesting.

Close to Greatness
Story: 3-Stars
************
Genre-wise, this episode focuses primarily on self-help. More specifically, self-help for women. The Audible editors do their usual fine job in presenting titles that have served them well, yet they are outshown by the inclusion of Rachel Hollis as part of the panel. Her presence is easily the most compelling author point of view to date for the Audicted series. Mrs. Hollis is forceful, convincing, clear, funny, and driven. Those not familiar with her work (like me) will come away from the show with a clear understanding of why she is successful.
If that was the entirety of the show, the rating would have been higher. Unfortunately, two-thirds of the way through the conversation veers suddenly into the romance genre......again. I am increasingly disappointed at the heavy over-representation of this genre on the show.
Performance: 4-Stars
*******************
The majority of the episode is a highly compelling listen. Mrs. Hollis has a talent for communicating her message, and the show hosts wisely hand her the reins. Unfortunately, the latter part of the episode is more akin to a romance fangirl gathering compared to the status-quo-challenging self-help discourse. This is a jarring shift in tone and content that, in my opinion, should have been left on the cutting room floor.

Women and families
I understand that there is some upset about being asked as a woman about the children and men never are. The extended upset though of the women in this segment over that question could be a sign that there is some insecurity about it. Could there be guilt? Could there be the pressure of how you should be as a mother?
And all there is to say "no it's not an issue for me. My family has worked this out." Thanks for the questions... next....
