The AI voice is very distracting. It’s flat. Misprounces Psyche half the time. I don’t think I’ll pick up another that’s narrated this way. Thank goodness this was short.

Enough AI

It almost sounds like a real person. Although there is no changing of voices. So it’s a little hard figuring out who is talking sometimes. Once in a while, the computer will say “psych” instead of “Psyche.” When referring to the “raven” hair, the computer said “raw-ven.” The “a” sounding like an “o.” But other than that, I could barely tell that it was a computer. There are some books narrated by a real person that make you want to tear your ears off. This was not one of them.

About the story itself, I liked the idea of her needing to atone for her actions by providing the antidote. The original version that I had read before made it sound like she just had to prove herself to her mother-in-law before being allowed back into her husband’s presence, earning godship. They were already married and the mother-in-law was butting in. Much of this book is from Eros’ perspective. It makes a lot of sense that this all would come about because he pricked himself with his own hands. In the original, we only know that she is bargained for by a powerful person who chose to remain anonymous. The story is fleshed out a little bit. It ends too soon. There was not even an epilogue. There is a war going on and the story ends as soon as he and she come to an agreement. It’s a bit jarring. I really liked the scenes when Eros and Psyche are talking. It would make a great movie showing the her alone (from her perspective) and from his with both of them together, struggling to keep his distance.

The virtual voice was not as bad as I thought.
