About this listen

When Pete Shelley, lead singer of legendary punk band Buzzcocks, passed away in 2018, we lost one of music's brightest stars - as well as the chance to hear his story.

Or so it seemed.

Recordings have surfaced of a series of remarkable interviews in which Pete tells the story of his life, his band and his place at the beating heart of the punk explosion in fascinating detail.

These remarkable recordings have now been brought back to life by professional actors in this audio edition of Ever Fallen in Love: The Lost Buzzcocks Tapes.

Transcribed from a series of late-night calls with a close friend, the audiobook goes song-by-song through Buzzcocks releases to reveal the personal memories behind the music and the inspiration for masterpieces such as 'Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)' and 'What Do I Get?'.

Published for the first time and with the blessing of Pete's estate, Ever Fallen in Love: The Lost Buzzcocks Tapes is a tribute to a founding member of punk and a chance to hear the story of one of music's true visionaries.

Good stuff!

Not a big Buzzcocks fan, but it's cool to hear the history of the UK's punk explosion from an insider.

And Pete's insights on songwriting and recording are interesting, too.

Definitely recommended for Buzzcocks fans or anyone interested in '70s UK punk.

Essential, with one caveat…

Pete’s words are great, and they’re uncannily brought to life by Philip Pope’s excellent voice acting. It’s just one fascinating story after another about the creation of some of the greatest songs ever made, with loads of entertaining tangents along the way. The only bummer is the author’s tendency to gratitously offer pompous critical opinions. Louie Shelley (no relation) is the kind of person who uses “novelty song” as a pejorative and goes out of her way to talk about how “pointless” various Buzzcocks covers by other bands are (three separate times). It injects a dissonant note of meanness and pretension amid Pete’s much more generous musings. But hey, nobody else did these interviews, so hats off to Louie Shelley for that, anyway.
