After experiencing deeply disturbing church hurt, my beliefs were all messed up. Being a single, black mother in a Latino church, I would never expected to find tribalism, coercion, nepotism, religiosity, prejudice, and hypocrisy to name a few in the house of the Lord.

The lying that happened on the pulpit was shocking, it made me wonder, what else could they have been lying about. I took a deep dive into Christian/Judaic Theology and all mysticism. I found God in whatever I listened to, everywhere I turned and in everything read. It was amazing! This Book confirmed everything I knew in my being when I joined that church, it confirmed everything that they tried to suppress to control/split/alienate/ostracize the people and it confirmed what I need to do moving forward.

I recommend this book to anyone struggling with their spiritual growth, and to anyone of any religious sect. You will love it.

Spiritually Beautiful

This kept me engaged throughout. The narrator was quite good, but sometimes when he was trying to do the voice of a woman or someone who was crying it got a bit silly. Although the author is Catholic, he has a very broad perspective on religion. I like his quote that God exists in spite of religion not because of it. It does make me want to visit with a medium, myself.

Good read for the spiritual seeker

I give this book 4/5 mainly because I have read better books on the subject, but I enjoyed it for the most part. The narrator was good although doing a women's voice was not his strong suit. It's great for those just starting on a spiritual journey or interested in being a medium.

I enjoyed it for the most part

This is an engagingly written work that shares the author’s personal history and family background, and his experiences as a medium and psychic. He makes good use of everyday ideas and concepts from contemporary life to help us understand psychic apprehension, the afterlife, the nature of the soul and communication with deceased loved ones and spirits.

However, it’s let down by the limitations of the narrator’s performance. Barry’s voice has a lovely, natural quality and the tempo of his delivery is great. But when narrating dialogue, he slips into what feels like the same inauthentic and overwrought “pleading” tone; this results in everyone coming across like someone’s idea of what a sad and naive child sounds like; unfortunately, this often ends up dulling the impact the words alone might have had on a listener. Maybe a workshop or two might help him to trust a little more in both his strengths and the simple power of words to speak for themselves, and resist the temptation to gild the lily.
