About this listen

Her carefully crafted life is about to be demolished.

After a difficult childhood, Samantha Williams craves simplicity: jigsaw puzzles, lectures at the library, and the students she adores in her role as an elementary school art teacher in the dusty farming community of LaCrosse, Washington.

But when an SUV crashes into the building where she teaches, her entire world is upended. Samantha manages to keep the children safe, but her car isn’t so lucky. Oddly, her purse—with her driver’s license, credit cards, and other identification—is missing from the wreckage.

After authorities discover that the driver in the accident was shot seconds before the crash, Samantha quickly becomes entangled in increasingly strange events that have her constantly looking over her shoulder.

Samantha has long tried to forget the tragedy of her past, but the twisting connections she discovers between the murdered driver, a deadly secret government project, and an abandoned town can't be ignored. Those involved are determined to keep these secrets buried, and they’ll use any means necessary to stop Samantha’s search for truth.

Black SUV and the golden apple.

This book should have been described as religious in the beginning. I thought it was
a mystery. I ff through the religious dialogue waiting to learn the Hanford connection. I'm glad I bought this book on sale.

ok but...

My review is only for the audiobook performer. This narrator is trying to do too many voices and does not have enough vocal range to carry it. she also does not know the correct local pronunciations of some big locations. Chelan, Gonzaga, Hutterite, etc. it is read so fast I had to lower the speed to 0.9 and even then it feels rushed but is understandable. Not a pleasant listen, I should have gotten the kindle version.

Weird mix of book types

This book was a mystery about a serious subject but had both comedic moments and religious overtones. Altogether just weird. The ending felt rushed and too neatly wrapped up. And those bible quotes were intrusive and really odd. The narrator spoke super fast even on a lower setting. In my opinion the author needs to decide which type of book she really wants to write instead of a hodgepodge that didn’t work for me.

Family History nightmare!

I liked Carrie’s sense of humor.
I loved that the main character didn’t know who she was. She had to piece it all together. I could follow the story line very well. I loved it. The book kept me on the edge of my seat with all the twists and turns. Mary was awesome but awful. I didn’t guess it was her at all. Great book.
I appreciate the first responders angle. I would and will recommend this book to others.

Another great Carrie Stuart Parks novel

Carrie Stewart Parks delivers another great story. Listening or reading carefully throughout the story is a must. Her details and clues are interspersed throughout the story and create “aha”moments at the end for the readers. I’ve learned when reading or listening to Carrie‘s books, that when I question a detail or character at the beginning of the story, there is always relevance and Carrie always wraps the story up in a neat package for the reader.

Narrator is not great.

Narrator ruined the story. Too bad as the setting is where I live, Eastern Washington State.
