About this listen
It is December 1961 and the doomsday clock is ticking.
The free and the unfree worlds live under the same dark shadow of a nuclear nightmare; and yet normal life continues. Love affairs flounder, stumble, bloom and life, even for those on the front line of the Cold War goes on, in the main without an excess of melodrama or untoward incident.
But beneath the surface that Cold War continues, brutally with little ceremony and less remorse as the agendas of the players constantly shift posture. ‘Great’ Britain’s power is visibly waning, that of the United States still rising to some as yet unseen, unimaginable zenith and the Russians, well, they just feel persecuted by everybody and suspect treachery at every turn.
In America schoolchildren hide under their desks in air raid drills, JFK exhorts his people to build fallout shelters as all around the clock Strategic Air Command B-52s and B-47s fly to failsafe points around the Soviet Empire, waiting for the recall signal that might not, one day, come.
The countdown to war has reached ten minutes to midnight…
