About this listen

A love story about opening your heart, by Rainbow Rowell, the New York Times bestselling author of Eleanor & Park.

Cath and Wren are identical twins, and until recently they did absolutely everything together. Now they're off to university and Wren's decided she doesn't want to be one half of a pair any more – she wants to dance, meet boys, go to parties and let loose. It's not so easy for Cath. She's horribly shy and has always buried herself in the fan fiction she writes, where she always knows exactly what to say and can write a romance far more intense than anything she's experienced in real life.

Without Wren, Cath is completely on her own and totally outside her comfort zone. She's got a surly room-mate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can't stop worrying about her dad, who's loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

Now Cath has to decide whether she's ready to open her heart to new people and new experiences, and she's realizing that there's more to learn about love than she ever thought possible . . .

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell comes with special bonus material; the first chapter from Rainbow's irresistible novel Carry On.

Great Stoyrteller

The plot itself did not appeal to me, but I gave it a go after a friend recommended it. Rowell is a fantastic storyteller, she brings the characters alive and I find myself suddenly caring very much about them. What really disappointed me was the ending. There wasn't one. I was very surprised when the story suddenly ended at what story wise is perhaps 2/3 through the character and plot development. Partly it is a testament to the writer's ability that I find this so upsetting. But it takes away from the story for me, that the book ends so suddenly and without allowing the characters to achieve something significant. Perhaps there is a sequel? It feels more like a short story than a novel. I really would have liked to know what happens next.

Kinda amazed

Struggled to finish a bit, but after all this book was amazing. No one can write about love like Rainbow Rowell.

Everyone needs a Levi in their life

Everyone needs a Levi in their life 💖

I also really connected to the way Cath raged against their mother. And that she didn't want to forgive her. I like that the author didn't take the weak cop-out route regarding that.

The narrator, Rebecca Lowman, was also very good.
I can't really speak for the other narrator in the book, as I couldn't care less for all the Drarry fanfic, so I completely skipped over those sections.

So, while there were a few uncomfortable moments here and there that show that this book was written in the early 2010s, I still really enjoyed it.
Also Levi (dreamy sigh).

Not my cup of rainbow

I love the Simon Snow trilogy and read them first so maybe I just came in to this book with the wrong mindset. I just had a really hard time liking the characters. I know that does not have to make a story bad but for me it made it har to root for them. I also got pretty irritated about the book telling me how one of the characters was such a “good guy” when I thought he was a bit of an asshole who didn’t listen to or respect the main characters boundaries and prioritized his fragile masculinity over her wishes. It would have been fine if It didn’t feel like the book signed of on it. I am glad that this book lead to the other books though.
The reading was fine but sometimes the changing of readers for different parts was more disorienting than helpful.

Loved Levi

Great story. Fell in love with the character Levi. Wasn't much of a fan of the story within a story but loved the main story line so it was bearable.

Well written

I couldn't stop listening to it. The best book for every fangirl (and boy). The perfect depiction of a fandom and fanfiction
