About this listen

BBC RADIO 4 BOOK OF THE WEEK.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes has climbed the Eiger and Mount Everest. He's crossed both Poles on foot. He's been a member of the SAS and fought a bloody guerrilla war in Oman. And yet he confesses that his fear of heights is so great that he'd rather send his wife up a ladder to clean the gutters than do it himself.

In Fear, the world's greatest explorer delves into his own experiences to try to explain what fear is, how it happens and how he's overcome it so successfully. He examines key moments from history where fear played an important part in the outcomes of great events.

With an enthralling combination of storytelling, research and personal accounts of his own struggles to overcome fear, Sir Ranulph Fiennes sheds new light on one of humanity's strongest emotions.

Disappointing

Author's narration skill are poor.
One or two nuggets but overall disappointing. from a individual for whom I have high regard for his achievements.

Incredible book that changed my life

I am a young man with similar health issues, pains and traumas as well as fears as Sir Ranulph. Because of that I have failed previously in many areas of life due to undue anxiety, fear and cramps. That contrasts with unique achievements in other areas of life. This book helped me smooth the ups and downs.

A comprehensive guide to fear

A well researched book that manages to be both, informative and motivational at the same time. Also, the fact that it’s written by someone who shares my fear of heights, really helped me relate. Wonderful book!

Meandering narrative

Occasionally riveting, but ruined by stilted narration. Perhaps I was spoiled by the narration on "Climb your mountain" and "Shackleton" with Jonathan Keeble narrating the same author, but he manages to turn highly dramatic chapters into the equivalent of someone reading a grocery list. There's no emphasis or performance, just someone dispassionately reading a book out loud.

Chapters are loosely focused on different types of fear, some very entertaining or shocking and some that I found myself completely bored with and bypassed over large sections. I would wholeheartedly recommend his other works instead.

Disappointing

I really wanted to like this book, having seen Ranulph Fiennes on lecture tours some years ago. Unfortunately his narration was stilted and hesitant, like he was seeing the words for the first time. This might actually have been better, narrated by someone else.
Shame because he's an absolute hero but that doesn't translate to this audio book.
