I en gammel træstub i udkanten af engen bor Felven. De små febørn trykker deres næser flade mod hendes grønne vindue for at kigge ind til hende. Selvom hun drømmer om at være som de andre, er hun hverken en fe eller en elver. Hendes hår er langt og mørkt, huden er bleg, øjnene er blågrønne og vingerne er så små, at de ikke kan bære hende.
Da jorden en dag begynder at ryste, giver den ældste fe og elverkongen hende en opgave, som kun hun kan løse. Sammen med en lille, klog syvsover må hun forsøge at få kontakt til de underjordiske. Desværre falder syvsoveren hele tiden i søvn, når den er ved at fortælle, hvad de skal gøre.
