About this listen

Benjamin January made his debut in best-selling author Barbara Hambly’s A Free Man of Color, a haunting mélange of history and mystery. Now he returns in another novel of greed, madness, and murder amid the dark shadows and dazzling society of old New Orleans, named a Notable Book of the Year by the New York Times.

The summer of 1833 has been one of brazen heat and brutal pestilence, as the city is stalked by Bronze John - the popular name for the deadly yellow fever epidemic that tests the healing skills of doctor and voodoo alike. Even as Benjamin January tends the dying at Charity Hospital during the steaming nights, he continues his work as a music teacher during the day.

When he is asked to pass a message from a runaway slave to the servant of one of his students, January finds himself swept into a tempest of lies, greed, and murder that rivals the storms battering New Orleans. And to find the truth he must risk his freedom - and his very life.

Engrossing

I read several books in this series when they were first published and were actual books with pages. They were 5 stars then as they are now. Looking forward to listening to the entire series.

Compelling Story…

I love historical fiction and I am really enjoying this series this far. The story telling is compelling. The grim accuracy of the depictions of slavery and racism and all of their attendant disturbing realities are well developed without feeling like a textbook. I am looking forward to continuing to explore this series.

Stunning sequel to A Free Man of Color

Barbara Hambly ably continues the story of Benjamin January, in prep oval war New Orleans.

Great story, wonderful characters, more please.

I love this series and hope that more of the Benjamin January books will come to audible. Ron Butler narrates ok, and I realize Morgan Freeman, Ving Rhames, or Samual L. Jackson as narrator would be cost prohibitive. I can dream... This time and place in history is well told through Barbara Hambly’s characters and story line. Please do more audio books from this series.

The beautiful history and narrator.

After a slow start the story picked up well and I really enjoyed listening to it. It is a little difficult to keep some of the characters in order.

Benjamin January series

This story weaves in one of the most ghastly horror stories from New Orleans. This is the 2d of the Benjamin January series and I can’t wait to read the next one! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Benjamin January

if I could picture someone playing him in a movie or TV series it would either be Avery Brooks in his prime or Idris Elba. I just think this is an underrated book series and no one has made a movie or TV series yet like they did Hercule Poirot or Sherlock Holmes
