Story
In a gay nightclub in Orlando on June 12, 2016, the shooter, Omar Mateen, murdered 49 people and wounded 53 others. The attack was the deadliest act of violence against the LGBTQ+ community in US history and the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since 9/11. But there’s a story you haven’t heard. The FBI had a secret history with the shooter and his father. To obscure that history, the FBI pushed a false story that the media dutifully carried—that the attacker was a secretly gay Islamist extremist who had chosen to target Pulse and planned the attack for weeks.

Explore these and other questions in Serial Killers: Real and Imagined, where public scholar Emily Zarka looks at the serial-killer trope across history, from murky 17th-century legends to 21st-century true-crime obsessions.

Story
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

At the height of World War II, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, was home to 75,000 residents, consuming more electricity than New York City. But to most of the world, the town did not exist. Thousands of civilians - many of them young women from small towns across the South - were recruited to this secret city, enticed by solid wages and the promise of war-ending work. Kept very much in the dark, few would ever guess the true nature of the tasks they performed each day in the hulking factories in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains.

Serendipitous Discovery
Stephen Greenlane's Find Your Singing Voice was a serendipitous discovery. This book aims to help you discover your unique voice by understanding your breathing, vocal cords, diaphragm, and more. I often perceive myself as monotonous and have never considered learning anything about singing. Getting this audiobook helped me understand my voice. He simplifies everything to make it understandable for an inexperienced singer. His practical strategies and voice exercises seem to create magic. Understanding your vocal range, posture, how far to push your ribcage and larynx, breath support, and learning to warm your voice first can contribute to healthy vocal cords. It's also important to be mindful and relaxed to avoid damaging your voice. He provided numerous exercises and activities designed to teach us how to use our voice and the body parts surrounding it, such as the esophagus, ribcage, throat, diaphragm, mouth shape, and breath, while also introducing us to the art of singing. I am pleased with this audiobook. It is like learning a new language. Try it. We all sing, and this will help.

Like Having a Singing Coach
This is a great audiobook about improving your singing! It dives deep into how the voice actually works, which really helped me to understand what I was doing wrong with my own singing. For example, I didn’t realize how much I was straining my voice on a regular basis. And tips on breath control have already made a huge difference in both my singing quality and volume.
I think this audiobook is something like having a vocal coach by your side, but without the price of actual lessons. I found that the exercises are fantastic at strengthening your vocal muscles and hit those higher notes.
The book is also packed with little insights that helped me connect emotionally with my singing, which made my voice sound more authentic (for lack of a better explanation).
I found the sections on turning nervous energy into stage presence especially helpful. It’s the kind of stuff you don’t always think about but can totally change your performance.
In short, if you’ve ever wanted to take your singing to the next level but felt stuck, this is the book you need. It will help anyone who’s serious about mastering their voice, whether they’re new to singing or looking to fine-tune their skills. Highly recommended.
