About this listen

During the hot sweltering August of 1943, in a world filled with messages of war, a young man of twenty-one years stepped off a cattle train filled to the brim with scared and eager young men. Most of them had never been this far south or met the dreaded sand flea that calls this place home.
Henry Powers went on to serve in the Fourth Marine Division during World War II. He participated in the island-hopping campaigns of the Pacific Ocean and fought on Iwo Jima, Saipan, Tarawa, and Roi Namur.
Powers was an avid note-taker and artist and filled multiple journals with doodles and words. It is my privilege as his grandson to publish his journals to give you a glimpse into the life of a Marine artillery forward observer in World War II. Especially so, since I also served as a United States Marine.
The journals are unedited and the neatness or messiness of the script indicates whether he was in the field, on a ship, or in garrison. Some pages are even stained from rain and seawater.
Editor Bio-
Dr. David Powers is an adventurer, philosopher, and pioneer and lives a life of constant experimentation. His life's compass is "to seek out adventure in everything he does by being intentional, determined, and unstoppable and by energizing and outfitting others to embark on their own adventures". He fulfills his purpose through speaking and books and is a best-selling author in psychology and education. He is a decorated veteran of the Marine Corps and a founding member of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He is married and the proud father of four feral boys and one princess that he and his wife homeschool. His mission in life is to find the magical best mug of coffee in the world.
