About this listen

Longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction 2020

Finally free from his nightmare of a marriage, Toby Fleishman is ready for a life of Tinder dating and weekend-only parental duties. But as he optimistically looks to a future of few responsibilities, his life turns upside down as his ex-wife Rachel suddenly disappears.

While Toby tries to find out what happened - juggling work, his kids and his new, app-assisted sexual popularity - his tidy narrative of a spurned husband is his sole consolation. But if he ever wants to really understand where Rachel went and what really happened to his marriage, he is going to have to consider that he might not have seen it all that clearly in the first place....

A blistering satirical novel about marriage, divorce and modern relationships, by one of the most exciting new voices in American fiction.

So many books in one!

It felt close to life, real. I imagine not everyone will identify with the plot and narrator but I’ve listened to the book twice and will probably listen to it again.

Better as a screenplay

I found the narrator hard to listen to and I don’t think it’s all her fault, it is a hard book for audio, better on Hulu… overall a pretty well observed look at marriage and forgiveness…

Diabolical and tedious beyond belief

This book came highly recommended by a friend but I’m thinking she doesn’t actually like or know me to suggest it!
The narrator is annoying and the story just goes around and around in circles. I did hang in there to the end but hopefully can save you the effort. Don’t waste a credit on it.

Conclusion killed it for me..

Nevermind I had to endure the extremely boring mind of Toby for the first 75% of the book, just when I thought ”ahaa this is the twist I have been expecting, so this is Rachel’s point of view and we are getting somewhere”, I was hit by the most banal “so why did the hell did I spent so many hours on this book” conclusion. Such a waste of my time..
