Publisher's summary

I did something I had never done before.

I had a one-night stand.

Then in true me fashion, I left my phone at his house during my desperate venture to escape.

I tried hard to ignore the texts sent to my best friend’s phone....

Amethyst: Sup, these selfies are cute as shit, but your lips looked better wrapped around my...

I did not text him back.

I did vow to never speak of him or that night again....

I’m Amethyst Lily Tatum, and up until this point, I’d managed to maintain a fairly low-key life. I’m what you would call a socially unacceptable hot mess. Instead of partying, I’m skating, flipping ollies over guys who loved to underestimate me. Then I started college, met a wild girl who I would soon call my best-friend, had my first drunk one-night stand, left my phone at his house, and then, when I finally managed to meet my mom’s new boyfriend, I found out that my one-night stand was now my new stepbrother.

This is a stand-alone novel.

Amazing Narrators

I'm not usually in to Young Adult, but thought the synopsis was interesting so off I went. The story has a lot of emotion in it. There is infidelity/cheating, surprise baby, drugs/alcohol, biker gang, kidnapping and so much more. This was a Heinz 57 book with so much going on. But it really kept your attention and you just wanted to read/listen longer to see what would happen next.

Amethyst is a hot mess. But then she has a one night stand and everything changes. That's when Heinz 57 begins. It's a ride, but what a ride.

Logan Anare and Victoria Connolly are both new narrators for me. I have to admit I loved Victoria Connolly. She has the best male voice I have ever heard. She can read to me any time. Logan Anare plays an angry but lovestruck Maddox to a tee. The voice he uses is perfect.

Angsty Stepbrother Romance

Flip Trick by Amo Jones is a stepbrother romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Logan Anare and Victoria Connolly.

This book was so much more than what I thought it was going to be from the blurb. I liked some aspects of it, but other parts felt like they were really not necessary for the storyline. I don't want to give any spoilers away so I will leave it at that. The relationship between Maddox and Amethyst is very messy and let's be honest toxic. But I still couldn't help but root for them to get their happily ever after.

Logan and Victoria did an amazing job on the narration. They both really know how to bring a story to life. I look forward to listening to more of their work in the future.

I would recommend this book if you're looking for an angsty romance, stepbrother romance, college romance, sports romance, second chance romance, or romantic suspense.

So emotional 😢

I've read books by Amo Jones before. I've been meaning to read this particular book for awhile. When it became available as a audiobook, I picked it up. This book is much less dark than what I've previously read but does have some "gray" elements. Amethyst is a unique, tomboy, skater girl, prefers to study, is anti-social, and has pink hair. Amethyst ends up getting really intoxicated and having a one night stand with Maddox. Maddox is the resident playboy, fights for a living, but ultimately is a heartbreaker. Amethyst never thought she would see Maddox again but ends up finding out that her mom and his dad are living together. Maddox also has two brothers. Amethyst and Maddox met as kids unknowingly. They made a connection as kids that was hard to break as adults. "You’re right, Amethyst, you can’t be owned. Because a young boy already claimed you when you were seven years old.” There's a lot of emotion and heartbreak before things have the possibility of working out. Personally, I still think Maddox's ex set him up and was evil in spite of how things turned out. Maddox shouldn't have let how his parents relationship turned out influence him, to that degree. That particular scene 💍, broke my heart! Maddox really broke Amethyst. I almost wish Amethyst could've formed a relationship romantically with all three brothers. Are there some offensive lines in the book? Yes, that's Amo Jones writing style though. If you don't like that, definitely don't read her much darker novels. This novel has stepsiblings trope (even though I would say they really weren't related)and the characters are college aged. This novel does talk about affairs, open relationships, kidnapping, and pregnancy. I'm sure there are more I didn't think of.

Really good read

I enjoyed this book so much. It was a one day listen for me. I could not stop. Another Jones never fails to throw a plot twist in. Everything was on the mend, and I thought to myself, how is there 2 hours left?? You guys, read this book. Better yet, listen to the audio.

Everything but the kitchen sink

*given an ALC for an honest review *

Wow… this book had everything and honestly too much… this could have had half the “twists” and it would have been so much better.. the amount of twists by the end I was rolling my eyes.

Did this book pull me and make me giggle a lot in the first half? Yes

Did this book become overrun with way too many twists and angst especially in the second half? Also yes…

I listened to this book via audible and the narrators did a great job. Duel narration is always nice. Both narrators matched and embodied the characters well.

My review:
Audio: 4/5 ⭐️
Spicy: 1/5 🌶️ (some spice but very quick and jump cuts)
Story: 2.5/5 ⭐️

Spoilers below!

- one night stand turned instant unhealthy relationship?
- Step siblings?
- secret kid with an ex that the guy chooses over who he loves?
- years later reconnecting and giving it a second chance? (Cheating on current bf to do this)
- immediate new issue of her being pregnant with her ex/current boyfriend?
- him switching her birth control unknowingly?!
- choosing the baby daddy at least at first… while our mmc flips out and revenge bangs a friend and rubs it in her face?
- loses baby a few months later and kicks baby daddy to curb..
- oh and it goes on… there are still more twists and turns and… surprise MC??
- Kidnapping?
- Secret half sister who’s been in the background this whole time? And dating the MMC’s brother?
- half sister is also pregnant?
- Amnesia?
- Andddd ends with another pregnancy with the FMC and MMC (finally?)

I also will openly say I am not a fan of the pregnancy trope or honestly pregnancy before the epilogue… however.. there was simply too many twists and turns…

Additionally when they reconnected there was no “on the page” discussions around how they each messed up, apologized for their wrong doings/toxic behavior/jumping to conclusions… just it was painful. They would reconnect he reminds her she’s his… but the SECOND he has doubt he freaks out and pulls a stunt.. it’s so unhealthy.. years of this shit.

Angsty!

I love Amo's books but this one felt much different than her usual books and not as dark as I was expecting. It was good and held my attention from beginning to end, but it was too angsty for me. Maddox and Amethyst were an entertaining couple but their sometimes toxic relationship made for a whole ton of drama. It was full of twists and turns that I never saw coming. I found the MC aspect to be a very unexpected switch in the storyline. Logan Anare and Victoria Connolly both did an amazing job bringing this story to life.

Ok!

Amethyst and Maddox!

The narrators did a good job telling the story and giving the characters a voice that made listening to this entertaining.

The story i give it a 3.5*. From the book title and cover i was expecting more talk about skateboarding. I loved how the two first meet. Then years later they meet again not knowing they know each other and once they discover it, they decide to have a relationship only to have an obstacle thrown their way minutes later leaving Maddox with life changing decesion and Amethyst devastated. Then time passes everyone tries to move on but they see each other again and there is a supposed connection that again they try to be together to once again to once again now its Amethyst turn to get news that changes things and when she tells Maddox she needs time to think not even a minute goes by and he is hooking up with another girl and flaunting her in Amethyst's face. Loved a younger Maddox not a fan of the older one because i don't understand how you can do that to someone you love and how can Amethyst be with someone that the minute things get difficult he goes and hooks up with someone else. The drinking thing too and then you add the MC part towards the end, just seemeda bit too much for me.

Oh my gosh

And Amo does it again of course. I listened to this in one sitting because it just sucks you in from the get go. I never know what to expect with Amo’s books and I’m never mad about it. This is such a great stand alone and if you love some tension… yes please!

There was just a little too much plot twists.

The book started off at a normal pace and then slowed down a bit which had me wondering what the big plot twist would be. Then it happened and, then something else, and then something else, and then something else. Too many twists and turns. Like someone read the rough draft and said “Now add in this obstacle, ok it needs to be a little longer now throw this in”.

The MMCs were faced with some adult issues but it never made sense why they didn’t talk them through or face them in a more mature way because the issues that came up were issues that weren’t a make or break, and they even admit that later but in the moment it’s the end of the world for them. Classic YA.

The narration was pretty good. I have no complaints.

🖤🖤🖤

Amo writes it, I read it. It’s that simple. Such a good book, definitely a little more tame than her usual style but I adored this story!
