First rule of being a nanny? Don’t fall for the single dad, even if he is smoking hot.
But that’s exactly what happens when grumpy small-town sheriff Asher Whitlock reluctantly hires me to take care of his daughter for the summer. Neither of us is thrilled with the arrangement, but he’s desperate for help, and I need the money for grad school this fall.
All we need to do is keep our distance and remain professional. Turns out, that’s easier said than done.
Instead of focusing on my future, all I see is the strong jawline, crystal-blue eyes, and rock-hard body right in front of me. We try to resist each other, but we end up crossing every line until I’m in his bed.
I tell myself it’s just this once.
Okay, twice.
All right, every night.
But it’s got to end–he’s 14 years older than me, with a kid and a stressful job. Have I mentioned my dad is his boss? Then, there’s the past I’m trying to forget. Secrets aren’t easy to keep, and mine are getting too big to hide.
Walking away is never simple, but when I do, I can’t look back.
Even if it means leaving behind the man I was never meant to love.

When his ex-fling and mother of his daughter travels abroad for work, Asher is thrilled to get to have uninterrupted time with his daughter Olivia - but the nanny agency last minute lets him know that they can't find a nanny near his small town that does ASL, which is a requirement since Olivia is Deaf. Luckily for him, Phoebe - an audiology doctoral student who is trained in ASL and is also his bosses daughter - is home for the summer and agrees to spend the time nannying for him. The chemistry between them was palpable and there was the kind of tension that became electrifying once they gave in. There is a little bit of back and forth with them since their relationship would be inappropriate to many people and she isn't sticking around long and they don't want Olivia to get attached, but they're upfront and communicative about wanting each other and when their resolve crumbles, it makes the result even better.
I loved that there was a healthy co-parenting relationship between Asher and his ex (Sara) and that there was no drama there. They never loved each other but there was no animosity - they both prioritized Olivia and had a mutual respect as co-parents but also there own romantic lives. Sara never felt threatened by Phoebe or tried to intervene in Asher's relationship - she was super happy for them and the three of them always showed up for Olivia. There was no parental friction or pettiness there, which is something I wish more single parent romance books had.
I also loved that Asher supported Phoebe's dreams - he does not want her to give them up for him, even though it makes the future of their relationship harder to predict. He knew she had ambitions before she met him and he was not about her giving them up for him. They worked together to pave a path forward that allowed her to accomplish them without too much strain on the relationship and that was really nice to see. Their romance was just so loving - Asher is so protective of Phoebe and she is so supportive of him too. Their care for each other was obvious. The spice in the book was good, particularly because of Asher's dirty mouth.
I first read the book and then listened to the audiobook and the audio made the story even better - the narrators were smooth and fit the characters so well. They really pulled me into the story and kept me riveted from start to finish!
** I read the book first on my own and received a free review copy of the audiobook after from Valentine PR. Decision to review is my own **
