About this listen

Forensic psychologist and rookie FBI agent Alexis Forrest returns to her hometown of Broken Hill to investigate the disappearance of a missing teenage girl. Returning to this snowy New England town is the last thing Alexis wants to do. She has a strained relationship with her divorced parents whose relationship did not survive the disappearance and murder of Alexis’ older sister, or her dad’s prison sentence.

The circumstances of this girl’s disappearance are surprisingly similar to her sister’s yet the local police aren’t exactly welcoming to an inexperienced FBI agent sent to help them solve the case. But then another girl, a wealthy student at a prestigious nearby boarding school, is found dead.

Trying to figure out if the two cases are connected and a serial killer is on the loose, Alexis finds herself getting close to all of the people she thought she had left behind forever. One of those people is a high school boyfriend, a long lost love.

The town is full of secrets that want to stay hidden. To make peace with the past, Alexis must unearth them all. What happens when she finds something that puts her in danger? Will Alexis find who did it or will she become the next victim?

The terrible narration completely ruined an otherwise good story

This was my 1st experience with “virtual narration” (AI) and it was not a good one. There was almost no pace, tone, or emphasis change in the whole book. It was often difficult to follow the story because there was no differentiation between characters - no voice or inflection change and not even a pause between one character and another. Seems to me AI should be able to do at least slight differences in voices or accents, and certainly something different than a continual light, cheery voice when giving bad news or exclaiming in excitement. None of that anywhere. I almost quit the book after the first few chapters but decided to stick with it to see if it ever improved. The story itself was good. My recommendation would be to go with Kindle paperback versions. AI narration doesn’t seem ready for Prime time yet.

Virtual voice gotta go. Story is great. Half the time you can't figure out who’s saying what because the virtual voice is monotone

good story simply awful to listen too

story was good. it was so obviously read by AI. no emotion warmth or anything yo make you want to listen. it was so hard to listen to I had to run it with no sound to get far enough to leave a review. please reissue this story with a real person as the voice. it deserves better.

Good story-terrible artificial narration. All but killed the listen.

The story was good enough to prevent me giving up on the narration which sounded like a breathy clueless young teen!
I will try some of the earlier books which had a live narrator. This is a disservice to the author🤦🏼‍♀️

Great plot line, terrible narration

Very mechanical “virtual voice” difficult to listen to. Almost didn’t come back to it. I highly prefer a real
Voice with inflection. Good story line and plot so I put up with voice.

Simple who done it story.

It was a decent book to listen to while doing other things. Did not require to much concentration to follow along. I am not huge fan of the narration, I prefer a human with inflection.

great story ruined

A computer reading the story totally ruined it. I could hardly listen to the computer generated voice that was flat and missed intonations of real speech. I won't be able to listen to the rest of the books in the series.

Virtual voice has a lisp?

I’m sure the story is fine. I just could not get past the narration. It was awful. I will avoid all virtual voice recordings from now on. I volunteer to record this story so we can enjoy it instead of wishing the narrator had a speech therapist. I normally love this kind of story but I just could not force myself to finish listening to it.

Good stroy, terrible narration

I like the story but it was really hard to follow. I am not a fan of the AI narration. There is no change in voices so most of the time you have no idea who is talking, and that makes it hard to follow. There are also a few places where there are words that have the same spelling but are pronounced differently that the AI pronounced wrong, It's not a big deal but it's another reason that a human does it better. I would suggest redoing the narration with a real person that does different voices for different characters.

The plot was good, the characters were believable.

Absolutely hated the AI narration. it is so bad. No sense of cadence, mispronounced words.
