About this listen

Jack Monroe had very few paths before him. In 3263 you could either choose to work the mines, extracting raw materials for shipment to Luna, or take a menial job maintaining the atmosphere of Earth.

Not satisfied with either, Jack chose to enlist in the AHF to protect those he loves and find his purpose in life. Should he successfully complete the first year of training, he will have become something he never would have dreamed of–a leader and a killer. Armed with the power of Li-Tech, Jack and his fellow soldiers of the AHF prepare to face the greatest threat mankind has ever seen.

Can they defeat the all-encompassing darkness that is slowly destroying world after world? If they fail, if their Light is extinguished, humanity–like so many others before them–will fall.

Love the idea using light as the basis for these soldiers. The variety of the weapons and powers is pretty cool.

Great!

I really enjoyed this story because the writing was done very well in my view. The way it was written leads me to believe they have experience in the general setting. I have listened to many books as I drive down US Highways and I am always looking for engaging stories to listen to. This book reminded me of great writers such as Brandon Sanderson and Christopher Poleine ( miss spelled I think). I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who likes space, fantasy, and language that is not afraid to offend. When I was tired this story helped me stay alert with is own form of comedy and action.

It was the husband who listened to this wonderful book and wrote this review.

Great start to what I hope is a long series

Creative magic system, unique military point of view. It is obvious that the author is former military himself. Loved every bit of this amazing book.

Amazing detail, uniquely inspired

It's hard to write a review about a book without giving away any spoilers, but this book quickly became one of the more enjoyable sci fi stories I've read! Refreshingly creative concept! Best way I could describe it is that it reminds me of a cross between the game Mass Effect and the movie Ender's Game, but with the introduction of unique fantastical technology. If you enjoy reading about futuristic concepts, I highly recommend this book. I was able to follow it easily and it kept my attention the entire time. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!!

Introduction of unique fantastical technology!

This was a fun listen. It had an interesting technology system and believable universe. There were a few moments I had to fact check but did not distract me from the plot. I'll have to pick up future titles.

Strong story and world building

The world building had many neat concepts and the idea of telling it from a bootcamp was good. That said, some of the suspension of disbelief required took me out of the story. The God tier characters are a bad point for me, and a big part of my issues with the story. I think it could be better served without them. The technology used I could, partially, get behind. The largest issue I had was the narration itself, the cadence of speech almost made me stop before the story really started. I'm not a fan of the constant 'ta' at the end of so many words and I feel it kept me from enjoying the story more.

Enjoyable to a point.
