About this listen

Handpicked by Rhys Bowen, Jasmine Blackborow is the dazzling narrator for the 12th installment of Rhys Bowen's best-selling Royal Spyness Mystery series.

Georgie, or Lady Georgiana Rannoch, is busy planning her upcoming nuptials to Darcy O'Mara. Unfortunately, what has started as a simple wedding has become quite a royal headache and grand affair, thanks to a guest list that includes the queen and the appointment of princesses as Georgie's bridesmaids. “If only Darcy and I had eloped!” she thinks, as she attempts to organize her wedding and find a place for her and her husband-to-be to live.

Just as she despairs of ever finding a home, her godfather offers his fully staffed country estate. With Darcy off in parts unknown, Georgie makes her way to Eynsleigh alone, only to find the grounds in disarray, and the small staff suspiciously incompetent. Not to mention the gas tap leak in her bedroom, which is beginning to look like an attempt on her life. Something sinister is afoot - and bringing the place up to snuff may put Georgie six feet under before she even gets a chance to walk down the aisle....

Editorial Review

A fitting continuation

We were all completely heartbroken by beloved narrator Katherine Kellgren's passing in January. She possessed that rare talent that allowed her to create what felt like a full multicast with her own individual voice, and it was this gift that made her the perfect series narrator for Rhys Bowen's colorful, charming, and very funny Her Royal Spyness series. A brilliant narrator such as Katy leaves almost impossibly large shoes to fill, but after much consideration and numerous auditions, Rhys Bowen selected Jasmine Blackborow to carry on the torch. This newest (12th!) installment in this fabulous cozy mystery series continues the adventures of Georgie and Darcy and Jasmine proves up to the task, honoring the memorable voices Katy created for the characters while not imitating. We hope you’ll have a listen. —Emily C., Audible Editor

Not my favorite addition to the series

I want to say the Rhys Bowen is one of my favorite authors and I have read all of her books. That being said this story was fine. It is not my favorite addition to the series, it was light on action and there wasn't enough mystery.

In regards to the new reader, no one can replace Katherine Kellgren, and the narration was fine. But I did dislike that she changed the pronunciation of some key words, it made it feel somehow like a different story.

Overall, it was a fine addition to the series, but it's not going down as one of my favorites. I hope Darcy and Georgie have a grand adventure on their honeymoon that we can read about soon.

Great story, needs new reader

I was sad to hear of the passing of the old reader. She really brought the books to life and gave the stories something extra special. There were many times through this book where I couldn’t decide which character was talking because the voices didn’t change enough. Some of these were pivotal moments such as Darcy coming back near the end of the book. Having to rewind and try to figure out what happened just takes away from the magic.
When Darcy, Grandpa, and Belinda all sound the same, you know there is a problem.

Replaced narrator with wrong person

Unfortunately the original narrator for the series passed away. But the replacement is a poor choice. She doesn’t pronounce the family name close to the same way. That should have been a key point. Her reading pace is very slow and drawn out and she misses the switches from one character to the next often using the wrong voice initially and correcting in the second sentence. The quick pace of the original narrator was part of the enjoyment. Disappointed.

She gets married. Finally.

I have really enjoyed these light cozy mysteries as a change of pace. Four Funerals and Maybe a Wedding is the twelfth in the series. Like any series, there is some unevenness in the books. And although I do think this is one of the better books recently, there are parts that drive me nuts. Georgie’s continued assumption that Darcy is cheating on her, when every time, it is part of his job as a spy or another very explainable reasons is tiring. Georgie is smart and this thing about making her doubt herself all the time doesn’t really work. Some self doubt is natural, the extent of her doubt in Darcy is not.

In the last book, as someone in directly line to the throne (35th, but still direct), Georgiana had to receive permission from the King and Parliament to remove herself from the line to the throne so that she and Darcy could marry (since he is Catholic). Having been given that permission, this book is about the planning for the wedding. I already said above that the wedding happens. There have been enough delays in this series already, so I at least would want to know if it was going to be delayed again.

I appreciate that the crimes being solved in this book (and generally in the series) are not high profile crimes. I think some mystery series get stuck in the trap of making the crimes larger and larger, which tends to mean more ridiculous and unbelievable. (Looking at you Cormoran Strike and Bruno, Chief of Police.) The crimes still tend to be homicide, which is serious, but major figures in the world do not seem to be dropping.

My frustration in the series has mostly be around the lack of development of the characters and relationships of the main protagonists, not the mysteries themselves. And this one does develop the protagonists fairly well.

I was about ready to write the series off after the last book. But after this one, I will keep reading.

The story is as great as usual but

Rhys Bowen has written another wonderful story with the usual annoyances Georgie has to put up with and the suspenseful moments but the narrator just wasn’t up to scratch.
I really missed each characters voice that Katherine Kellgren had developed. Also the new narrators voice was a bit on the deep pitched side, she didn’t seem to be able to do any voices in a higher pitch. She also didn’t give the characters the emotion the situation called for.

Another wonderful Lady Georgie Story

A great addition to this series. The mysteries kept me thinking and engaged. I was totally wrong about one thing (ok maybe more than 1) and totally right about another.... wink wink.
The setting was nice too, Sir Hugh's ancestral home in Sussex. She really shines as the mistress of a great house and using her mother, great aunt (Queen Mary) and great great grandmother (Queen Victoria) as mental guides she rises to the task of trying to run the home. However all the shenanigans going on there put a bee in our Georgie's bonnet.
Three weddings or not, Georgie and Darcy; Gram-pa and Mrs Huggins; Claire and her German, Max.
Queenie becomes a savior in more ways than one.

i'm having trouble writing the above because my mind is full of the sad news about the wonderful narrator Katherine Kellegren's passing. I did not know until the forward on this recording by Ms. Bowen. My first introduction to Ms. Kellegren was the Rick Riordan series, The Kane Chronicles, and i was hooked!!! I found other stories she narrated and enjoyed her so much. I was so shocked i couldn't start the book right away. Usually i re-read the entire series and add the latest... I decided not to this time. Ms. Kellegren will be missed by many. I'm thankful to have found and heard her remarkable narrations.
Soooooooooooooooo... Big shoes to fill.

Jasmine Blackborow does an excellent job. I was able to still hear the characters voices. Fig, Binky, and Queenie are a bit different, but after a while I wasn't noticing that anymore. Kudos Ms. Blackborow for making these characters her own. I look forward to hearing more of the Royal Spyness Mysteries

Kudos to the reader

I would just like to address some of the comments regarding the reader. While no one will be able to fully take the place of Katherine Kellgren, Jasmine Blackborow did a marvelous job. If you are put off at the outset, please take some time to give her a chance. She clearly listened to Kellgren’s recordings and perfectly inhabited the characters, matching the accents and tones beautifully, particularly Darcy, and Georgie’s family. Enjoy this gem and fingers crossed for more to come!

A great series

This is a great series which I have spoken about before. The series continues to grow in its story introducing new characters to bulk out the back story and add layers and texture to future stories.

Absolutely everything I wanted in a storyline!

I waited so long for this to finally publish! It was so worth waiting because it was a well delivered story and I was absorbed into every chapter and could not put the book down. Or stop listening to jasmine read it to me. I love the characters, I especially want to point out the character of Georgianna’s mother and what took place with her. I liked it! Clair showing some real personable love for her daughter. I really enjoy the character of Queeny as well and so glad she is back into Gorgie’s life in a very positive way and with style! But of course the best part was wondering if the wedding was ever going to happen or was Rhys Bowen going to write it out and stop it from happening until the next book. But it does take place and I relish every description and every feeling and every detail. Rhys Bowen wrote s fabulous story and I want more! I also want to applaud Jasmine for her outstanding performance and her talent and confidence she processes to pick up where Katherine Kelgrin left off. It was a superior performance, a job well done for both the author and the narrator. I’m going back to read it again!

Love their story moving forward!!!

As a long time audible fan I was sad to hear the narrator of these had passed, she did an amazing job and is missed. The new narrator is an excellent choice and after the first chapter I was engrossed as always in these wonderful characters. Love how Georgie is maturing and growing into her own woman and really glad to see her wedding dreams unfold. This was a really interesting and unusual mystery plot also. Can't wait for another installment, please keep writing them!
