About this listen

It was everywhere. You couldn’t talk about the revolution without using the word freedom in the same breath. But Gideon Jackson knew that freedom meant something different if your skin was black. Fast’s fictional account of the post Civil War era takes us into the life of Gideon Jackson, a black man, newly freed, and determined to make a difference.

An important work of fiction.

While a fictional account of reconstruction, Freedom Road touches on truths that occurred all over the south in the years after the Civil War. There are many tales from the Reconstruction era that are told in our history classes, but the most important ones will still remain to be included. Freedom Road is a great start for someone exploring this time period of American history.

One of my favorite books of all time

If you haven't ever read Freedom Road, give yourself a treat. It's an incredible true story - one of Howard Fast's best. Fast is wonderful to listen too. He was a storyteller and it is easy to listen to his books.

Story of courage, true history

Beautiful prose, touched my heart like nothing else i’ve read of this time. The south (in lower case on purpose) should never forget anymore than the north for allowing the selling of those poor souls.

Without Prejudice

Being African American this was a very hard book to read. I felt so many emotions. 100 Yeats was not long ago.

Why haven’t I read this before?

This was a truly amazing story. That yet while fiction in nature shows the harsh reality of a period in time I knew nothing of before listening to this book. I listened to it in one day, the last day it’s available on Audible. It’s truly a shame they are removing it. Highly recommend, and I hope they bring it back.
