About this listen

She's one of America's fairest and funniest ladies. Actress and screenwriter, director and comedienne, Fannie Flagg is also a most accomplished and high-spirited author. Said Kirkus of her first book, Coming Attractions: "It's subtitled 'A wonderful novel' and that's exactly what it is." Here is her second. Get ready, because it's going to make you laugh (a lot), cry (a little), and care (forever).

What is it? It's first the story of two women in the 1980s: gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode tells her life story to Evelyn, who is in the sad slump of middle age. The tale she tells is also of two women, of the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend, Ruth, who, back in the 30s, ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama - a Southern kind of Café Wobegon offering good barbecue and good coffee and all kinds of love and laughter, even an occasional murder.

And as the past unfolds, the present, for Evelyn and for us, will never quite be the same.

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café is folksy and fresh, endearing and affecting, with humor and drama, and with an ending that would fill with smiling tears the Whistle Stop Lake...if they only had a lake.

I absolutely love hearing this in the author’s voice! You get to hear her story exactly the way she intended it to be told, with the added bonus of authenticity to her characters as individuals and the way that they interrelate with one another. One gets the impression that these characters are based on people the author grew up around, with the characteristic “Southern Charm “ of folks from the rural South.

I bought it before checking it was the abridged version, I’m sad since this is one of my favorite books. Yet, the performance is amazing.

Love it! Too bad is not the full version :(

This story takes you back and forth from modern day to a time long past. The characters are formed well enough that you feel you know them, and look forward to what will happen next.

whimsical, fun, draws you in

This was a very well-edited, short version of the actual book, and the author's read was fantastic. Perfect length for a homesick pick-me-up.

lovely abridged version

I love the book and the movie, so I bought this audiobook without listening to it first. The performance is fantastic and dynamic, but this isn't even close to being the full novel. It's only 4 chapters, and you get a story, but it's a rather shallow telling of the original. Some of the best themes are left out entirely. It's a bit of a disappointment, but I still listen to it when I want a story to fall asleep to.

This isn't the full novel
