A True Hero's Journey Through Mountains & Loves

It is wonderful to read this adventure tale that takes the young Erica to South America, where she hikes killer mountains, falls in love, and breaks hearts along the way. Rare it is that such a hero's journey is that of a young woman, so this tale is to be treasured!

We can see how Dr. Elliott became the empathetic, wise, and experienced physician that she is today as she learns valuable life lessons at each stage of her journey, one she tells with staunch truth, allowing us to voyage with her through the highs and lows of her young life.

It is nice to hear her voice as the narrator telling tales of her youth, so I congratulate her on doing all the reading, instead of retaining young, chirpy professional narrator because the story would not be the same. We have the feeling of a campfire story with hot toddies and snow falling all around.

You will love her first book, Medicine and Miracles in the High Desert, that features the first part of her journey to the Navajo reservation in the US!

Falling in love with Erica.

It is not surprising to me that throughout Erica's life journey, everywhere she goes, people seem to fall in love with her and she with them. Reading this memoir filled me with inspiration. It did not take long for me to be moved to tears listening to this book on audio, which I highly recommend because then you can hear Erica speaking all the of the many languages that she knows including Navajo and Quechua. I am honored to say that I know Erica personally, so I can say from experience that she is not bull shitting her way through this amazing story. She really is this genuine, loving, kind and committed to her integrity. What I didn't know is what a bad ass she is when it comes to climbing the world's highest mountains and saving other people's lives along the way (many times). What I think I loved most about this book was the honesty. It is so refreshing to hear people tell the truth rather than the version they think might be more palatable. This is what I love about Erica. She has that commitment to truth telling and truth living that cuts through all the malaise and bullshit in our society and makes being in her presence feel healing all by itself. Thanks for living your life Erica, and writing about it too! I can't wait for the next one!

First rate tale of adventure

As a person who loves both spiritual exploration and nature, I loved listening to Erica Elliot read her memoir. It was a tale of self discovery, set in various exotic and challenging locations.
Erica wanted to know her purpose and what she wanted to do with her life.
I loved the parts when she read in French, German and Spanish, which brought those relationships and exchanges alive. I was exhilarated by her descriptions of climbing mountains in the Andes, enchanted as she spent the summer with a boyfriend in Turkey, Her skill as a teacher and instructor for Outward Bound impressed me. I was also impressed as she came to heal the relationship with her mother.
I appreciate this intimate view into another woman’s life, and how she came to fulfill her destiny.

Adventure awaits!

Again Dr. Elliott spins a tale of real life that seems novelistic. It’s hard to believe that all these stories are true but Erica -- my neighbor for decades -- assured me so. The book sent me daydreaming of an early womanhood as adventurous as young Erica’s. Erica's narration conveys appropriate emphasis. A great listen indeed, not just for friends, but also mountain climbers, Peace Corp volunteers, anyone who ever considered med school, travelers at heart, day dreamers, lovers, and those struggling to find their true purpose. You must fit in one of those categories. Enjoy!
