About this listen

L. E. Modesitt, Jr. continues the Saga of Recluce, the long-running, bestselling epic fantasy series. In a new story arc, From the Forest follows the early life of a man known by many names depending on who you ask—hero, tyrant, emperor.

Alayiakal, who will one day be known by many names—not all of them flattering—has to climb the ranks of Cyador's Mirror Lancers, fighting against unforeseen weapons and ancient technology.

Alayiakal, however, has secrets of his own to protect: his ties to the Great Forest and his magus abilities. He must silently pretend to be a conventional soldier favored by fate—until that very same fate forces him to choose.

Good character development.

Some history repeats from other books in series. Still a good book and a good "read".

glad to finally hear about an ancient figure

I can't wait until the next chapter in this saga. Kirby Heyborne is the best voice actor in the genre. His range is huge.

Change in writing style detracts from story

the entire book, which is a decent L.E. Modest Recluce novel set early on the Cyadoran empire, is written in the present tense, which is like a gnat buzzing near your ear in terms of annoyance level. Standard story-telling mode is in the past tense (i.e. - "Mark walked down the street to the store, changed his mind about what he wanted to get, and returned home" versus "Mark walks down the street to the store, changes his mind about what he wants to get, and returns home." Using the present tense in storytelling is unnatural-sounding and jars me out of the story to translate it into the past tense mentally in order to make it flow and sound right. Praying Modesitt abandons this style of writing for the rest of his career! I am a big Modesitt fan, have read almost everything of what he has written, and have enjoyed them all. This is the first Modesitt book that I have disliked, and it is entirely because of the annoying change in the tense.

Not bad but not his best

The book overall was a good read but it lacked the depth of his previous work. The narrator was excellent. His use of different voices and speech styles kept me interested and entertained.
