About this listen

When the end came, it wasn’t zombies, asteroids, global warming, or nuclear winter. It was something that escaped from a lab. Something small, and very hungry.

It starts with deadly rain that delivers death where it falls, but soon the whole planet is under threat as the infection spreads, consuming everything before it.

A band of survivors on the Eastern coast of Canada watch as their world falls and crumbles to ruin. The infection seems relentless. More than that, it seems to be learning, adapting, and evolving faster than they can fight it. Worse still - it is infecting not just their bodies, but is creeping into their minds, dancing in their dreams.

Can they stop it before it takes them?

Or must they all join in the final dance of death?

This was a really good book!It was a good old fashioned horror novel.Something came to take over the world, just a bit at a time. David A Wood was a fine narrator.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.'

I don't know when this book was written but it had a rather old fashioned feel. I could imagine it as some kind of horror film classic. Huge mutant fungus spitting spore at the world. All good fun!

The story was excellent, really digging into a basic level scientific research on how the fungoid functions and adapts. Woods narration was okay, but the conversations didn't have the right kinds of inflections and variation that normal people have when they're talking. The accent of a major character was off as well. But as far as basic narration goes, it was easy to listen to.

Different take on an apocalypse

This story has the horror and the crushing atmosphere of a planet under siege by some kind of fungus down. The author explores it in a number of different ways with characters ranging from scientists, to people seeking their families, to the kinds of people who take catastrophic events and make them worse. To that end it's an interesting character study and it starts pretty fantastically going into everything without too much info dump. But the end of it seems to speed up a bit and while the ending is something I can appreciate I feel like I wanted to see a little more of what was going on. However it's still good, narrated great, and will definitely scratch that old school creepy crawly horror itch you might be harboring.

Solid but a little Short Horror Story

Not a bad story. The end was a bit of a let down. I don’t think I’ll be eating mushrooms anytime soon.

Really good book, really fun story. I appreciated the uniqueness of the tale and I really liked the hopeless feeling that the plot wove. I was expecting the ending, but it was still pleasant enough to give me a reason to suggest it to my brother. A pretty quick book that hits quick and doesn't stop.

I read the book back in 2018 but enjoyed it more with listening. It is more of a sci-fi horror thriller about a fungus wiping out not only humans but the whole earth. Enjoyed the characters of Shaun, Rebecca, and their kids Adam and Mark as they search for safe place and then a cure with the help of others . This book was an awesome Apocalypse story. I really enjoyed the multiple characters this story followed. I felt like with this story I was always kept on my toes as to which characters might kick the bucket. This wouldn't be so bad if he didn't write his characters so well to the point you care about the fates of each and every one of them. David a Wood narrating the book does a wonderful job of it. I really felt he was able to handle the multiple characters very well to the point I was able to easily tell when there was a transition.
