About this listen

The official companion book to the HBO series Gentleman Jack, created by Sally Wainwright and starring Suranne Jones

In 1834, Anne Lister made history by celebrating and recording the first ever known marriage to another woman. This is her remarkable true story.

Anne Lister was extraordinary. Fearless, charismatic, and determined to explore her lesbian sexuality, she forged her own path in a society that had no language to define her. She was a landowner, an industrialist, and a prolific diarist whose output has secured her legacy as one of the most fascinating figures of the 19th century.

Gentleman Jack: The Real Anne Lister follows Anne from her crumbling ancestral home in Yorkshire to the glittering courts of Denmark as she resolves to put past heartbreak behind her and find herself a wife. This biographical portrait introduces the real Gentleman Jack, featuring unpublished journal extracts decrypted for the first time by series creator Sally Wainwright and historian Anne Choma.

"Anne Choma's Gentleman Jack is not just a tie-in to the TV series, but a probing and page-turning study of legendary diarist Anne Lister, full of original insights and freshly decoded material from the 1830s period of Lister's hunt for a wife." (Emma Donoghue, New York Times best-selling author of Room)

Brilliant!

To have the story of the remarkable Anne Lister told mostly in her own words is incredible! Thank goodness her diaries were preserved and deciphered, for us to now have this insight into her life.

Excellent book

Worthwhile listen if you have any interest in Anne Lister’s life and loves. This book focus primarily on the period covered in the wonderful BBC HBO series “Gentleman Jack.” It includes excerpts from Anne’s coded diaries and moves along the same chronological path the series does. Hopefully there will be more written about this fascinating woman but I’m so appreciative that we’re beginning to discover more about her particular brilliance and more generally learn what life was like for women who loved women during that era.

Fantastic

This audiobook was formatted so well. I loved the choice to have two narrators for this, one to read the diary entries and another to act as narrator for the main text of the biography. I loved how the woman who read the diary entries had a soft Yorkshire sounding accent that felt very authentic to what Anne Lister's actual voice would have sounded like. Wonderful book on a fascinating woman.

Exactly what I was looking for!

Fast-paced, entertaining listen about a fascinating figure. 5 stars for the primary narrator—1 star for the secondary narrator who reads Ann Lister’s diary entries. She sounds weary, breathy, and feminine, and was ridiculously miscast.

Ann Lister deserves to be known

I never knew about her until the show. Then I had to read this book. This audiobook was lovely and I plan on listening to it every so often for motivation.

A Gem in our world.

loved it. sad that AW lived such a short life after AL demise. With I could have met them in the flesh but thankful to for the journal and rhe shows. or else I would not know this really happened in real life. Had I known sooner, I would have gained courage and truly admitted myself that loving a woman was not a sin but a blessing.
