Le miniere di Montsou, nel nord della Francia, 1870 circa. Étienne, arrivato da Lille in cerca di lavoro, è accolto nella squadra della famiglia Maheu, e con terrore scende per la prima volta nella terra. Il lavoro in miniera è tuttavia durissimo, scopre Étienne, e la paga non basta neppure a soddisfare la fame. Étienne organizza allora una cassa di previdenza a sostegno delle lotte (è l’amico Pluchard di Lille, un membro dell’Internazionale dei lavoratori, a suggerirglielo) e, vincendo la sfiducia e la paura di molti, uno sciopero. Nessun minatore scende in miniera per giorni e giorni. E tuttavia la direzione non cede. Quale lotta può funzionare dunque? Per Suvarin, un esule russo nichilista, solo distruggere tutto.
