Critic reviews

"The recent death of Gilda's father and Juliet's psychological problems give the story a heft that elevates it above the typical middle-grade mystery or ghost story. Stylistically, the writing is occasionally over the top, but give this book high marks for substance." (Booklist)

This listen kept me interested through the entire book. It made you smile and this book never slowed down. It is really a kids (pre-teen to teen) book but as an adult it was just a really fun listen.

Wonderfully entertaining!

My daughter loves this book. I think she has listened to it a hundred times over. She likes the character Gilda because she is "a little weird." The book is funny as when Gilda dresses up and tries to pass herself off as a grown-up. The book is thrilling as when they are looking for a ghost. It's everything a tween girl will love. Mine has since gone on to read the other Gilda Joyce books (can't wait for the audio) and is looking forward to the author writing another.

Great tween story

Cute story with a great ending. The characters are well developed too. Will consider this series as a new one to continue.

Great Adventure

I've listened to this audiobook series before through the library, and it was a delight to listen again. Jessica Almasy works serious magic with this series. Although I'm reviewing the first book, it's really all of them. Gilda's father passed away and she writes letters to him, case notes about her psychic investigations, school reports, and novels on an old typewriter he owned. She's not perfect, she's selfish and unkind to her mother and brother, she misreads people, and yet Gilda is incredibly lovable, sharp, and hilarious. There's tremendous character growth through the series. Overall, highly recommend whether you're tween, teens, or (in my case) middle-aged.

Love the Gilda Joyce series!

As an adult female reading this book, I thought the writing was clever and witty. The mystery part of it is appropriate for age 10 and up in my opinion. There were a couple “ghost” story parts that make me think a younger child could become slightly scared, but definitely not anything scary. More of a “Boo” type of scary. Looking forward to reading more in the series.

Great story for kids and adults

That's it. Otherwise love this narrator and were hoping this was going to be a great book.

Not Appropriate - Talk of Suicide and Pills

After reading the other reviews, I decided to get this audio book for my 10 year old. I couldn't sleep, so I listened to it before she got to it and it was a good thing! This book focuses on a person that commits suicide and then becomes a ghost that haunts her neice. Definitely a subject that I am not ready to go in depth on with my daughter. It was an interesting book, just be aware before you give it to your kid.

Too dark and disturbing for my tween
