About this listen

An international best seller with over two million copies sold, this is a story of an artist's desire for beauty and the ultimate corruption of innocence.

17th Century Holland. When Griet becomes a maid in the household of Johannes Vermeer in the town of Delft, she thinks she knows her role: housework, laundry and the care of his six children. But as she becomes part of his world and his work, their growing intimacy spreads tension and deception in the ordered household and, as the scandal seeps out, into the town beyond.

Tracy Chevalier's extraordinary historical novel on the corruption of innocence and the price of genius is a contemporary classic.

I really enjoyed learning more about the art world and Holland at that time and to learn more of the personality of the artist and the subject

the story behind the painting

I liked the story and the narrator. I found myself listening even when not commuting.

engaging narrator for an unexpected back story

I enjoyed this, wished it was a longer book. I wondered where she got her moxie to say such bold things.

Couldn’t stop listening

I’ve listened to this audiobook repeatedly—all over again and chapters independently—since I’ve had it. Hattie Morahan’s narration—her voice and inflections—are in perfect sync with Griet’s (the main character amd narrator of the story) personality. I read the book many times as a teen; the audio has brought it to life in a way I’d have never expected.

Perfect Narration

A fictional story about one of the world's most famous paintings told in such realistic detail as to be a biography rather than fiction. Very well written and read.

Hard to remember it's fiction

As enjoyable narrated as it was when I read it years ago. A beautifully told story of imagination.

Narrator was perfect for this special story.

The author did an excellent job with this one! The narrator is really good. It’s a curl up with a blanket book. I throughly enjoyed this book and think anyone would love listening to it. It’s so refreshing to find an author who doesn’t see a need for any R rated content. It has a very original plot! Definitely recommend!

A really great read!!

I really enjoyed this audiobook. If you are familiar with the Pillars of the Earth series, this is kind of like that. I wish the book had been longer. I much prefer long sagas. Although I am aware of how the lower classes were treated, especially women, I try to suppress my inner feminist who wants to be very angry at the goings on in the homes of the well to do. If you are in any way triggered by such things, you might want to skip this one. (I have certainly read worse, as far as that goes - The Pillars of the Earth included.) The narrator was wonderful. I generally slow down the voices because I just prefer it. Her voice at 80% was as smooth as silk. You could fall asleep to it. Just a very enjoyable, well written piece of historical fiction, narrated beautifully. You can't go wrong. I enjoy historical fiction, but I am not one to compare every item for historical accuracy, so I will not speak to that.

Great storytelling

The painting comes to life. I loved her bravery coupled with meekness. Her beauty coupled with insecurity. Her tragedy coupled with hope.

Beautiful. Subtle. Refreshing.
