About this listen
Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable, audiobook edition of #Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso, read by Sarah Jes Austell. The first thing Sophia Amoruso sold online wasn't fashion. It was a stolen book. At age 17 she was a dumpster-diving, shoplifting anarchist. By 29 she was the founder and CEO of Nasty Gal, a $100 million-plus fashion empire.
Filled with brazen wake-up calls ("You are not a special snowflake"), frank observations ("Failure is your invention"), and behind-the-scenes stories from Nasty Gal's meteoric rise, #Girlboss is more than just Amoruso's story; it is a book for anyone seeking a unique path to success - even when that path is winding as all hell and lined with naysayers.

Story
The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

As a young adult, I loved it
The whole message in the book is something I think all the young 20-something women of the world should know about. Sophia's story is a real inspiration and it does make you feel like anything is possible. Her journey to being who she is today is so simple, practical - she did regular everyday stuff. The narrator's voice is also fitting considering the title of the book. loved every second of it. will definitely be listening again.

Did not finish
This is a boastful book, full of gratuitous swear words (seriously, it's unnecessary and not cool).
Boasting about shoplifting. Boasting about several menial jobs. Good for you, Sophia. It's just not my cup of tea. The fact that the narrator sounded like a teenager didn't help.
And while I'm getting things off my chest, I find referring to women as girls deeply patronizing.

I needed to hear it and you might too
first of all the narrator was a perfect fit. The story was definitely a little cheesy (but not in an eyerolling way). It was about defying the odds and it's hard to miss the point because she hammered it home to me without being repetitive.
