Im Gorgias, einer der umfangreichsten Dialoge Platons, trifft Sokrates auf eben jenen damals weithin bekannten Rhetor Gorgias. In seiner ihm ganz eigenen Art zieht Sokrates Gorgias sogleich in ein Gespräch über die Frage, was die Redekunst eigentlich sei und ob man sie tatsächlich eine Kunst nennen dürfe. Mit der dialektischen Gesprächsmethode der Erkenntnisfindung überfordert, reicht Gorgias schon bald das Wort an seinen Begleiter Polos weiter, der nach Kräften bemüht ist, die Rhetorik in ihrer staatstragenden Bedeutung gegenüber Sokrates zu verteidigen - jedoch ohne Erfolg. Es gelingt Sokrates herauszustellen, dass die Redekunst keine Kunst sei und ihrem wahren Bemühen nach auch nicht nach Erkenntnis strebe, sondern lediglich das Ziel verfolge zu überreden.
Scheint das Gespräch zunächst eher akademischen Charakter zu tragen, entwickelt es sich spätestens mit Kallikles Einmischung zu einer fundamentalen und teils hitzig geführten Diskussion über die Frage nach der richtigen Lebensweise, also jener Frage, die im Zentrum der platonischen Philosophie steht: Der Frage nach dem guten Leben.
Der Gorgias ist nichts weniger als ein Plädoyer für die philosophische Lebensweise, die darin bemüht ist, als einzelner Mensch wie auch als Teil einer Gemeinschaft ein gutes und richtiges Leben zu führen, erfüllt von Sinn und Ordnung. Nicht der reine Lustgewinn habe im Vordergrund zu stehen, so PLaton, sondern die Mäßigung und die Herrschaft der Vernunft.
Lebendig und mitreißend lässt der Hörbuchsprecher Volker Braumann Sokrates und seine Gesprächspartner im Gorgias miteinander diskutieren, wobei es ihm gelingt, jedem der Teilnehmer eine ihnen eigene Stimme zu geben, die nicht nur den Inhalt trägt, sondern den Redenden auch Leben und Charakter einhaucht. So wird Platons Philosophie lebendig und in ihrer literarischen Schönheit hörend greifbar.
