About this listen

Confederate John Singleton Mosby forged his reputation on the most exhilarating of military activities: the overnight raid. Mosby possessed a genius for guerrilla and psychological warfare, taking control of the dark to make himself the "Gray Ghost" of Union nightmares. Gray Ghost, the first full biography of Confederate raider John Mosby, reveals new information on every aspect of Mosby's life, providing the first analysis of his impact on the Civil War from the Union viewpoint.

Critic reviews

"Undoubtedly the best book to appear on this topic to date." ( Arkansas Historical Quarterly)
"Likely to be the best biography of the Confederate partisan leader John S. Mosby for a long time to come." ( Choice)
"A volume that will become the standard reference on Mosby." ( Kirkus Reviews)

A well researched book about an almost forgotten historical figure. Except for civil war buffs, I would venture to guess that few people under the age of forty even know who this remarkable man was. As remarkable as his achievements during the war were, my admiration for him grew as I learned details of his life after the war.

Amazing bit of history

Besides being an excellent book about the tales of John Mosby the Parisan Ranger it is a great example of a great man and a great American. Fair dealings and truth telling were Mosby's way of life. A raider who would rather not take life. We (The United States) could use several thousand Mosbys in our modern government today. What has happened to us?

Col Mosby was of the Kings of asymmetrical warfare

This is a well written book about an interesting and resourceful soldier. Despite his lack of formal training in military maters, his intelligence and ingenuity produced remarkable results! However, the narrator is terribly. This is a book about a Virginian, and a majority of the characters are Southerners, and the narrator seems incapable of representing these people in an accurate or even vaguely authentic way (accents). Having grown up in West Virginia, and lived in and visited most of the Country represented in the book, his mispronunciations became quit annoying. An attempt should have been made to find a narrator who could have done justice to the spirit of the book and person of J.S. Mosby. If you wanted a Yankee for the narration of the Northern characters, either get someone who can present a legitimate Virginian/Southern accent and can do a credible Northern accent, or get a second narrator for the Northern characters. (His narration was also rather flat and boring). I will recommend this book to history buffs, but with a caveat about the narration.

Very interesting book!

Loved it. Truly one of America's heros, this is a must read for anyone who likes history. Narrated perfectly, cudos to all involved in the writing and telling of this man's life.

Great read, great American hero.

I had a hard time finishing this book because of the narrator. The reading was flat where there should be accents, but with misplaced accents on unimportant words in a sentence. Odd. Worst were the poor impersonations of Southern accents of the historic figures in the story. Again, odd.

Great book, distracting narrator.
