About this listen

The achievements of Australian women have long been overshadowed by the deeds of Australian men. Susanna de Vries has remedied this with her outstanding research, and this audio book details the life stories of 18 courageous Australian women who broke down the barriers of prejudice. From Lillie Goodisson, pioneer of family planning; Eileen Joyce, world famous pianist; Enid Lyons, our first female cabinet minister, these are women who have affected the lives of thousands through their achievements. Great Australian Women tells the story of women who changed the course of Australian history.©2001, 2002, 2003 Susanna De Vries (P)2005 Bolinda Publishing Pty. Ltd. Gender Studies

Editorial reviews

Susanna De Vries profiles 18 remarkable women who changed and influenced Australian culture and history. By presenting these well-researched biographies, De Vries showcases how these women broke down barriers related to gender, inspiring countless others in their wake. Among the women included in this collection are Enid Lyons, the first female cabinet minister; suffragette Louisa Lawson; and Olympic Gold medalist Fanny Durack. In describing these pioneers, Jane Clifton has an understandable tone of awe and reverence, but also has a resoluteness that underscores the strength these women showed in staking their claim as leading figures in Australian lore.

Stories of amazing women

The accounts of amazing women in Australia achieving their dreams in a world unfairly stacked against them made me mad at just how much bias there is. Every time they succeeded I was rooting for them all the way. A great listen, and opened my eyes further as a male, that more must be done to bring true equality!
