About this listen

Mackenzie thought she could finally breathe after escaping the Governments clutches—but fate has other plans.

After being held captive and tortured for months, Mackenzie is finally home. But her peace is shattered when Master Dagmar asks for her help. Children are still going missing, and the Task Force created to stop these abductions is hitting road bumps at every turn.

With her powerful mate by her side, she must track down the Rogue, a monster vampire crazed from drinking supernatural blood.

Their hunt leads them to the Warrens, the vampire city below GreenRiver. Where they delve deep into the world of the undead. Together, Lucan and Mackenzie must stop the Rogue before more young lives are lost.

With their relationship still forming, can Lucan and Mackenzie strengthen their bond enough to finally overcome their foe? Or will the trauma of the past be the catalyst that tears them apart?

After a trilogy, this book 4 could have really opened up the universe. Sadly, it ended up being a rather ordinary mystery procedural focused on Mackenzie and Lucan. I wanted more interactions with the Green family. I wanted more involvement by the Catch and Release bounty hunting guild. I wanted a Big Bad with lines… but all this book gave me was folks referring to the Big Bad … Jasper (even his name underwhelms), as if that’s enough to lure me into book 5.

Other annoyances include Mackenzie spending way too much time this far into the series with the ‘I’m not worthy’ insecurity and their romance inching forward to nothing more than a kiss or two. And, since this mystery involved vampires, couldn’t there have beeen some feats of vampire strength, burning in the sun, bouts of blood drinking … or any monstrous activity?! It felt like all the vampires were just super old white guys and ladies until the final (and only) action scene.

It wasn’t horrible; it just wasn’t all that interesting. When book 5 drops, I’m going to wait for a sale.
