Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm wollten ursprünglich nur den hauptsächlich mündlich überlieferten deutschen Märchenschatz für die Ewigkeit bewahren. Ihre Kinder- und Hausmärchen sind die wohl berühmteste klassische Märchensammlung der Weltliteratur. Eine große Rolle spielen häufig Verwünschungen und Magie, aber auch eine belehrende Funktion darf oft nicht fehlen.
Von den mehr als 200 Märchen des Grimm’schen Fundus wurden für dieses Hörbuch einige typische Tier- und Zaubermärchen ausgewählt. Auch die „klassische“ böse Hexe hat hier ihren berühmtesten Auftritt.
Alle Märchen besitzen einen ähnlichen Grundaufbau und funktionieren oft nach dem Schema: gut = schön und böse = hässlich. Manches mag inhaltlich nicht mehr zeitgemäß sein, für einen Rückblick auf die Ideale früherer Zeiten sind sie aber immer geeignet. Sie bieten eine hervorragende Projektionsfläche für Urängste und regen die kindliche, aber auch die Fantasie der reifen Menschen an.
Aufgrund ihrer Symbolhaftigkeit gelten diese Märchen noch immer als wichtig für die Entwicklung der kindlichen Psyche.
