About this listen

Penguin Classics presents Jonathan Swift's inventive classic, Gulliver's Travels, adapted for listening and now available as a digital audiobook as part of the Penguin English Library series. This abridged version is read by Hugh Laurie, star of the hit TV series House.

"Fifteen hundred of the Emperor's largest horses, each about four inches and an half high, were employed to draw me towards the Metropolis, which, as I said, was half a Mile distant."

A savage and hilarious satire, Gulliver's Travels sees Lemuel Gulliver shipwrecked and adrift, subject to bizarre and unnerving encounters with - among others - quarrelling Lilliputians, philosophising horses, and the brutish Yahoo tribe that change his view of humanity - and himself - forever. Swift's classic of 1726 portrays mankind in a distorted hall of mirrors as a diminished, magnified, and finally, bestial species, presenting us with a comical yet uncompromising reflection of ourselves.

The Penguin English Library contains 100 editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century and the very first novels to the beginning of the First World War. Part of a collection of vintage recordings taken from the Penguin Archives, the Penguin English Library series offers affordable, collectable, quality productions that are perfect for on-the-go listening.

Who other than Hugh Laurie should read a British audiobook version of Swift's classic novel? Perhaps his partner-in-comedy Stephen Fry (as the archetypal British storyteller), but Hugh Laurie is perfect for this role. He brings the voice of knowledge and wisdom, curiosity and sense of curiosity that the role of the narrator requires. This audiobook is a pleasure to listen to, and will suit multiple listenings with increased enjoyment.

I loved it. Swift's sarcastic indictment of the failings of humanity by a less than lucid traveler can't be topped.

A classic well read

I thought it was a great story. I’m already planning on reading it again. Great perspective on human kind.
