Publisher's summary

In the winter of 1924, Daisy Dalrymple Fletcher travels to a school friend's house to witness the estate's famous Guy Fawkes celebration. But she gets more than the quiet weekend at the quaint family manse that she was originally hoping for.

The home is the site of some severe family tension. The Viscount and head of the family is a strict and unyielding sort, insisting that everyone - especially his children - meet his own unreasonable expectations. On the evening of the Guy Fawkes celebration, the Viscount is found dead on the floor of his study, killed by his own hand. What's more, he apparently first killed a guest - a married woman visiting England from Australia - before turning the gun on himself.

Now it's up to Alec Fletcher, Daisy's husband and a DCI of Scotland Yard, to unravel the mystery and the long-held family secrets that led to this state of affairs. But a solution will require, perhaps, more than a little help from Daisy herself.

Nails on chalkboard

The voice the narrator used for many of the female characters was so shrill as to be very unpleasant to listen too. If i hadn’t been enjoying the story i would not have completed the book.

Not as interesting

Preferred the previous books plot. Less nasty characters. More interesting setting. The bad guy got murdered which is always a relief.

Predictable But still a fan!

Daisy is a wonderful peron and I enjoy every bit of her! The mysteries are not the most complex but the writing and narration are fun and I love them while working!

Great story, as usual. But . . . .

Carola Dunn writes such nice cozy mysteries - it’s why I keep listening. But why, oh why, does she keep using this narrator.
Positives for Lucy Rayner - has several voices for different characters.
Negatives - sing-songy and constant dipping down at the end of nearly every phrase.
Ugh!
I have such a difficult time keeping into the good story with her constant and rhythmic phrasing.
The last book read by Ms. Dunne, was so excellently narrated. I was so intrigued by the story and felt I could actually be there on the beach and hiking the trails and searching for ‘who dunnit’ - I couldn’t stop listening.
I was actually looking forward to this next book. Then I saw who was narrating. I was SO disappointed!!!
Please bring back Bernadette Dunne!!!!

I just peaked ahead and saw if I’m to continue to listen to this series I will be have to bear the horrid narration of this narrator. While not the worst I have had the misfortune to listen to, definitely a considerable amount of work on my part to to stay in-tune to the actual storyline.

always a good mystery when Daisy is involved

How Daisy is never accused of being a serial killer is beyond me. How does she seem to always be involved in a murder? Good light hearted cozy mystery.

Amazing storyline and fabulous narration!

Lucy Rayner is a slow-clap, standing-ovation, kind of narrator. I wish all my books were narrated by her and the voices and accents she gives each character makes the story flow so well. This book had a relatively straight forward storyline and likable characters with a huge plot twist along the way. Our beloved heroine, the Honorable Daisy Dalrymple is right in the thick of things as always! Carola Dunn has done it again, and I came along for the ride! Highly recommend, 10/10!

Not who I expected

Daisy goes to the home of a friend to observe their Guy Fawkes celebration. In the process, a visitor, as well as the lord of the manor are killed. Once again Alec is called to solve the case. I will say that the murderer is not who I thought it would be. Another wonderful mystery.
