This book won't "turn you into a hacker". It does a good job of introducing a complete newcomer to the approach, language, and tools used, and provides a good appreciation of the overall how and why of computer security. It should be especially valuable for beginners who might not intend to dedicate their lives to this craft, but want and need better familiarity with the subject than what they see on TV or the news.

For those who might want to go further, there's access information for a lot of free tools and information sources. Given the volatility of the Internet, some may no longer be current, but when is that ever not an issue? There are also good, succinct explanations of how the tools and methods work, when and why they each is most effective, etc.. This book won't "turn you into a hacker", but it does provides a reasonable foundation for further self-education, if you are a beginner and want to work at it. Considering the purpose, the price and the length, it can't be beat.

Does the job well.

A nice, short intro to hacking. Easy to follow along with while doing something else, as there are few commands to learn, and the chapters are short enough that it's no trouble to listen to one more than once to get back to those commands.

I listened to this twice at work today, then got on my Kindle Unlimited to borrow the print version for when I get home. I'm looking into hacking as a hobby and to make my home more secure. This was a perfect jumping-off point for that.

Nice intro to hacking

was a little dry but what can you expect from instructions. could have used a pdf on some of the material referenced rather than having to take notes would have made it easier and cleaner.

begginers guide

it lacked the fundamental understanding of what it is to hack. it failed to communicate the underlying principles of hacking. that is to say coming to understand the system and then discovering its exploits.

good overview.

Overall it wasn't too bad. It does move quite quickly though. However, in this case, "beginner" should mean that you already have a deep understanding of computer operating systems, file types, computer networking, coding, etc... IF you are fairly well versed in those topics the book will be a good resource and starting point. If you are not, it will all be fairly high over your head.

The term "beginner" is used very lightly
