About this listen
What if a villain believes they are a hero? Our addiction to social media has created a new version of fame. And lurking beneath the surface of beautiful, polished social media accounts is a community being targeted by a killer. Ela's life is falling apart after she experiences a miscarriage. Her marriage dissolves while the rest of her life feels on hold. In order to deal with the grief and guilt from losing the pregnancy, Ela spends a lot of time on her phone. And the more time she spends online, the more her new identity begins to take shape.
Rosie has found a new group of friends, other women who also make their living online. She cares deeply for this group, and they are the first non-family members she tells about her new adventure—she's pregnant! Through her connections and a chance encounter with a famous podcast host, Joan of This Is Now, Rosie and her friends begin to notice a bizarre trend among their influencer community. While it's estimated up to 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage, the stats seem to be much, much higher in their industry. And they soon discover many of the women have an eerily similar story.
Joan and Rosie race to find out who or what is behind these seemingly connected tragedies. But can they uncover the truth before it happens again? Emma Chapman's debut novel, Handmade Murder, is a fast-paced thriller that begs the question: Can you be a serial killer if your victims aren't born yet?

Story
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Kidnappers grabbed Jenna in broad daylight, right in front of her children and their horrified classmates. Her family was issued an insane ransom demand: $25 million in cash and jewels, payable by the end of the school day, otherwise they’ll never see her again. So glad I finally got to read Handmade Murder!
I bought a hard copy when the book was released, but I have a hard time reading so I didn’t get to it before Emma recorded the audio version. I ended up listening to the whole book in a day!
I thought this was so good, and can’t wait to see what Emma writes next.

Got my wheels turning
I’m a fan of murder mysteries and I will say I liked this better than a few of Tana French’s books, and that’s saying something! There were some thrilling gasps and I felt very rewarded for having one of my plot guesses be correct. Despite the dark subject matter, especially for me as a new-ish mom, this was a gripping and entertaining read.

Unique subject matter
Loved everything! I never would have thought this was a first time author if I wasn’t already aware. I was nervous when I heard Emma was reading it herself but pleasantly surprised. In fact found it better than many other professionals. The topic was not what I expected thankfully! Refreshing, interesting, heartbreaking, thought provoking and current. Looking forward to more…sooner rather than later!

My favourite podcaster turned author
Emma wrote a fabulous book that is easy to follow and easier to listen too. Listening to the A Beautiful Mess podcast, I could tell that there were elements of Emma’s life woven into the book…hello risotto! Living in South Africa, I couldn’t get the hard copy and I’m so grateful that I could have listened to the book. Well done Emma! Superb! When is the next one?

I couldn’t stop listening!
I’ve wanted to read this book since it came out but I mainly listen to audiobooks. So when Emma released the audiobook, I jumped right on it. I love how detailed this book was, and I loved all the nods to what Emma + Elsie share on their own podcast. Such a well thought out novel, and a delight to listen to. Especially since I look forward to Emma’s podcast every week, it was nice to hear a friendly voice reading this. Highly recommend!
