About this listen
‘Winners are grinners and losers are snoozers. It’s something my daughter said as we walked back to Hawtree along Bunya Mountains Road in the moonlight.’
A journalist temporarily takes leave from his responsibilities and his role at Queensland’s Courier Mail and retreats to The Bunya Mountains to write a novel. He hires the cheapest, smallest accommodation on offer for a five-week stay in a locality offering peace and quiet and lacking distractions. Hawtree happens to be the idyllic spot for the journalist to transform into a novelist; a hut hidden from the world amongst the trees. Great sleep and great progress happens. But something else is happening overnight inside Hawtree. Strange occurrences and reoccurrences are transforming the journalist into something more than the novelist he wishes to become before departing The Bunyas. A deadline is set and a horrible life-or-death choice must be made.
Happening Overnight is a short story from the author of The Spirit Series (The Spirit of Imagination, The Spirit of Pessimism, The Spirit of Optimism & The Spirit of Affection); the horror novel The Norfolk Solution; and the crime novels Mule, Misadventurous, Hacks, Double Feature & Skinflick.
