Publisher's summary

Oscar-winning director Hayao Miyazaki is the genius behind such animated classics as Princess Mononoke, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds. His bountiful imagination and compassion have earned him accolades the world over. Until the early 1990s, Miyazaki’s work was largely unfamiliar to American audiences. But that would soon change, and now fans of all ages eagerly await new material from the master.

Setting the bar high for quality animation, Miyazaki’s films break all sorts of rules and push many of the boundaries common to Western animation. Often exploring very adult themes, Miyazaki’s films challenge audiences while remaining supremely entertaining. Helen McCarthy presents this essential introduction to Miyazaki’s life and films, providing character bios, plot outlines, and critical analysis. Fans of anime, manga, or just animation in general will love this captivating look at a true genius.

"It is good at last to have a book in English about this master of film." (Roger Ebert)

Miyazaki 101

The author herself describes this as Miyazaki 101, and this is a great resource for fans looking for more history and insight into his work. If you already know a lot about Miyazaki and his films, then perhaps hearing the history you already know with plot descriptions and commentary of films you've seen multiple times may not be of great interest to you. But for newer fans who want to learn more, this is excellent. Originally published in 1999, Helen McCarthy covers his first seven films, from Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro to Princess Mononoke. Personally, I found this audio book quite satisfying, and the lack of the last four films was not an issue for me. James Yaegashi's narration was top notch.

A peek inside the amazing animation studio.

This has so many interesting anecdotes in here. It gives rare details of the inner working of a world class animation studio. I wish it would have talked even more about the details of creating the frames. I loved those parts. Great book.

Only two hours of actual content

I was led to believe that this book was about the director, but that is only the first two hours. The remaining six hours are filled with simplistic synopses of his films, which I could easily get on the IMDb website.
