About this listen

Here at Gordon's Pub and Grill, we get all kinds. My policy is that everybody is welcome and should be treated as a friend when they step foot inside my establishment. That policy never changed even when Death himself paid a visit.

When Death walks into Gordon's Pub- he is a bit on edge. But soon he finds that Death is looking for a friend- someone who will spend some time with him on his nightly walk touching souls. Gordon and Death, together....learn the true meaning of friendship in this beautiful story. Excellent narration, too.

I was deeply moved and thoroughly engaged by He Kindly Stopped for Me. The proprietor of a Callahan's-esque bar, finds himself chatting one night with a new patron: Death. An interesting premise that could go in many directions. And Seth Chambers' story takes a nuanced and unflinching look at what the Reaper's work may be like, all from the point of view of our deeply human, wonderfully alive barkeep. Perhaps that's the best compliment I can give this story, is that it's deeply human, in all the best ways.

David A. Nickerson's voice is just right for these characters. As Gordon the bar owner, he is avuncular and kind, your favorite uncle or older brother telling you a tall tale. As Death, Nickerson avoids the obvious choice of just sounding menacing, and finds a tone of matter-of-fact inevitability. His acting throughout is nuanced and engaging. Top marks all around.

For anyone who has lost a loved one, or who wants to live forever; anyone who finds change difficult, but still longs for adventure; anyone who just loves a damn good yarn, pick up He Kindly Stopped for Me.
